Slate Bolete Identification Guide

How to read Leccinum duriusculum under poplars: a dull slate-brown cap, dark scabers on a hard white stalk, flesh that flushes pink then greys, and a blue-green stain at the very base.

The first impression

The Slate Bolete is a poplar specialist, and the habitat announces it before the mushroom does. You are usually in a park, an avenue of black or white poplar, a shelterbelt, a dune system planted with aspen, or a scrubby stand of grey poplar on sandy ground. The mushroom itself is big and sober: a dull greyish-brown to slate-coloured cap, ten to fifteen centimetres or more across, riding on a long, stout, white stalk that is peppered with dark specks. It looks solid rather than plump, and if you press the cap it feels notably hard for a bolete, which is exactly what the species epithet means. Beside a typical birch bolete it seems denser, greyer and rather severe.

Reading the cap

Start with colour and texture. The cap is grey-brown, mouse-brown, slate or a dull umber, sometimes with a faint pinkish or vinaceous wash in young specimens and often paler and greyer in dry weather. The surface is dry and finely felted or suede-like when young, becoming smoother, and in dry spells it frequently cracks into shallow patches, particularly towards the centre. Shape runs from hemispherical in the button through broadly convex to almost flat in old specimens. The margin usually overhangs the pore layer slightly in youth, forming a narrow sterile rim of skin that can be seen from below.

The pore surface

Boletes have tubes rather than gills, so look for the sponge. In this species the tubes are long, easily separated from the cap flesh, and they are depressed around the top of the stipe. Their mouths, the pores, are small and round, and their colour is a useful timeline: whitish or pale grey in youth, then dull cream, ochre-grey and eventually a dingy greyish-buff. There is never a bright yellow or red pore surface here. Press the pores firmly with a thumbnail and note what happens: they slowly discolour to brownish or greyish rather than turning blue.

The stipe and its scabers

The stipe is the heart of the genus. It is long, eight to twenty centimetres, thick, often tapering upwards from a swollen or club-shaped base, and frequently a good part of it is buried, so it must be dug out entire. The ground colour is white to pale greyish. Over that, in more or less vertical rows, sit the scabers: small, projecting, tufted scales that are pale in the button and darken with age to dark brown, blackish-brown or almost black. Scabers are the signature of Leccinum, and they are the first thing to check on any bolete. Importantly, this species does not have a raised net, so run a fingertip up the stalk: you should feel discrete points, not a continuous mesh of ridges.

Flesh, section and colour changes

Cut the whole mushroom vertically from cap centre to stipe base, then watch it for five minutes; the sequence matters more than any single moment. The flesh is white and unusually firm. Within a minute or two the cut surface, especially in the stipe, flushes pink, rose or lilac-pink. That pink then dulls and deepens through greyish-violet to grey and finally to a dark slate-grey or almost black, working from the top of the stipe downwards. The last detail is the best one: in the lowest part of the stipe, right at the base and often in the mycelial zone, the cut flesh develops a distinct blue-green or turquoise stain. Not every specimen shows it strongly, but when present it is close to conclusive in combination with poplar. Cap flesh usually changes less dramatically than stipe flesh.

Spore print

Remove the stipe, lay the cap pore-side down on white paper, cover it, and leave it a few hours. The print is olive-brown to snuff-brown, sometimes with an ochre cast, matching the boletes generally. A print is not needed to name this species, but it confirms the group and rules out any gilled mushroom with a false pore-like underside.

Substrate, season and partnership

Leccinum duriusculum forms mycorrhizal partnerships with poplars and aspens, and that association is a hard constraint rather than a tendency. Look under black poplar, white poplar, grey poplar and aspen in parks, avenues, plantations, shelterbelts, dune slacks and waste ground, often on sandy or calcareous soil. It fruits from midsummer into autumn, sometimes appearing in loose troops along a line of trees, and it can be locally common on very unpromising urban ground where poplars have been planted. Since the fungus lives on the roots, always check the canopy above and around you before deciding.

Separating it from look-alikes on morphology alone

Within Leccinum, tree partner plus colour plus flesh reaction does most of the work.

Brown Birch Bolete, Leccinum scabrum, grows with birch, has softer, more sponge-like flesh, a warmer brown cap and flesh that stays white or turns only faintly pinkish, without the strong grey-black end point and without the blue-green base.

Orange Birch Bolete and Orange Oak Bolete, Leccinum versipelle and Leccinum aurantiacum, have bright orange to brick-red caps, so the dull slate cap of this species separates them at a glance; their flesh also darkens strongly but from a wine-red or greyish start, and their scabers are usually darker and coarser from the beginning.

Leccinum variicolor grows with birch and has a mottled, streaky grey-brown cap, flesh that goes pink in the stipe and blue-green in the base, so it is the closest reaction match; separate it on host tree, softer flesh and its characteristically blotchy cap.

Leccinum melaneum and its allies are dark-capped birch associates with less pronounced pinking.

Outside the genus, a bolete with a raised network on the stipe rather than scabers is a Boletus or a related genus; one with a bright red or yellow pore surface, or with flesh that turns blue immediately across the whole section, belongs elsewhere; and Tylopilus has pinkish pores at maturity and a netted stipe. What are scabers and why do they matter?
Scabers are the small tufted scales that stud the stipe of every Leccinum, arranged in rough vertical rows and darkening from pale to blackish with age. Feeling discrete raised points rather than a continuous raised mesh separates Leccinum from boletes that carry a network on the stalk.
Which trees must be present for this identification?
Poplars and aspens. Leccinum duriusculum is mycorrhizal with black, white and grey poplar and with aspen, so it appears in parks, avenues, plantations, shelterbelts, dune slacks and waste ground where those trees grow, from midsummer into autumn. A birch association points to a different Leccinum.
What colour change should I expect on cutting?
Cut the mushroom lengthways and watch. The white flesh flushes pink or lilac-pink within a couple of minutes, then dulls through greyish-violet to dark slate-grey or almost black, and the extreme base of the stipe often develops a blue-green or turquoise stain.
