Slender Parasol Identification Guide

A practical read of Macrolepiota mastoidea: the sharp nipple on a pale finely scaled cap, a slim near-smooth stalk with a movable ring, free white gills and an unchanging white flesh.

The first impression

The Slender Parasol is a mushroom of open, grassy places with trees nearby: woodland rides and edges, calcareous downland, mown verges, parkland turf, dune grassland and the mossy margins of paths. What you see first is a tall, pale mushroom standing well clear of the grass on a thin stalk, its cap looking almost like a small pale drum with a dark button in the middle. From a few paces the profile is the giveaway. Where most parasols expand to a broad plate with a low rounded hump, this one keeps a distinct, abruptly pointed nipple at the centre, which is what mastoidea refers to. The whole mushroom seems light and gracile: a modest cap on a stalk that looks too slim to carry it, often leaning slightly, and typically appearing singly or in small scattered groups or arcs rather than dense troops.

Reading the cap

Measure the cap first, because size does a lot of the work in this group. Here it is usually six to twelve centimetres across, occasionally to fifteen, which is markedly smaller than the great parasols. Young caps are ovoid or bullet-shaped, like a drumstick, then expand to broadly convex and finally to almost flat while retaining that sharp central papilla.

The surface pattern is the second key. The ground colour is whitish to pale cream. Over it, the outer skin breaks up into small, fine, appressed fibrous scales, pale ochre to greyish-brown, which are dense and often continuous over the central peak but become smaller, sparser and more scattered towards the rim, so the outer third of the cap can look nearly bare. The scales are flat and silky, not coarse, upturned or shaggy. The extreme margin is often fringed with fine fibrils and may be slightly grooved in old caps.

The gills

Turn the cap over. The gills are free, crowded, soft and rather broad, white to cream, and they do not run onto the stipe at all. Look closely at the point where they would meet the stalk: in this genus the gills stop at a narrow raised collar, a collarium, leaving a clean circular channel around the stipe apex. That collar, plus the free attachment, is what allows the whole cap to be lifted off with a twist. The gill edges are minutely fringed and stay white or discolour only slightly to pale buff in age.

Stipe, ring and base

The stipe is tall and slim relative to the cap, ten to twenty centimetres or more by six to twelve millimetres, hollow, and it swells into a rounded to slightly bulbous base without any cup or bag around it. Its surface is the character that separates this species from the largest parasol: it is whitish to pale brownish and only finely fibrillose or faintly and diffusely banded, never boldly patterned with the dark snakeskin girdles that ring the stalk of Macrolepiota procera. Some specimens show a faint mottling, so judge boldness rather than presence alone.

Around the middle to upper stipe sits the ring, and it should be examined carefully. It is thick, double-edged, white above and brownish beneath, and once it has dried a little it can be slid up and down the stalk with a fingertip. A movable ring is a strong genus character. Take a moment to confirm that there is no volva at the base and no sac in the soil; this mushroom simply has a swollen bulb.

Flesh, section and colour change

Slice the mushroom in half from the peak of the cap down through the base. The flesh is white, soft in the cap and fibrous in the stalk, and it is unchanging. This negative result matters: press, scratch and cut the cap flesh, the gill tissue and the stipe base and watch for two minutes. There should be no reddening, no saffron or orange flush, and no browning beyond a very slow dulling. The odour is mild and faintly earthy or slightly aromatic.

Spore print

Because one of the important separations is spore colour, print it. Cut the stalk off flush, set the cap gills-down on paper, cover it, and leave it several hours. The deposit is white to very pale cream. If the print comes out green or greyish-green, the mushroom is not a Macrolepiota at all but Chlorophyllum molybdites, a lawn species of warmer regions, and the print is the only completely reliable way to see that.

Substrate and season

This is a soil saprotroph, living on humus and litter rather than partnering with a tree. It favours well-drained, often calcareous ground in grassy places near or among broadleaf trees: woodland clearings and rides, hedge banks, chalk grassland, dune grassland, parks and verges. Fruiting runs from midsummer through to late autumn, peaking after a wet spell followed by mild weather. It is never found on wood.

Separating it from look-alikes on morphology alone

Parasol, Macrolepiota procera, is the main comparison. It is bigger, often fifteen to thirty centimetres across, with a broad, low, rounded central hump rather than a sharp nipple, coarser and darker scales spread evenly over the whole cap, and above all a stipe conspicuously girdled with dark brown snakeskin banding. Slender Parasol is smaller, sharply papillate and near-smooth-stalked.

Macrolepiota excoriata is a grassland species whose cap skin tears away from the outer part of the cap, leaving a smooth, almost naked margin with the scaly zone confined to the centre, and its stipe is short and its ring simpler.

Shaggy Parasol, Chlorophyllum rhacodes and its relatives, has coarse, upturned, shaggy scales, a stouter, abruptly bulbous base, an unbanded stalk, and flesh that stains orange-red to saffron then brown when cut or bruised. That colour change is the fastest separation from the unchanging white flesh here.

Chlorophyllum molybdites looks very similar in the field but drops a green print and is a lawn mushroom of warm climates.

The smaller Lepiota species are only a few centimetres across, with rings that are fixed and often fugitive rather than thick and movable.

Amanita species can appear parasol-like from a distance but have a volva or a rimmed bulb at the base, a ring that is not movable, gills that are attached or nearly so without a collarium, and frequently warty patches on the cap rather than concentric fibrous scales.

Common questions

What does the nipple on the cap tell me?
It is the character the name refers to. Macrolepiota mastoidea keeps a small, abruptly pointed papilla at the centre of the cap even when fully expanded, whereas the larger Parasol flattens to a broad plate with a low rounded hump. How do I use the ring in identification?
