Smoky Spindles Identification Guide

The First Impression and the Ground It Grows On

Smoky Spindles belongs to the community of fungi that appears in old grassland: unimproved pasture, a churchyard, a long-established lawn mown but never fertilised, a mossy dune slack, or a hillside grazed for decades. This is the same ground that produces waxcaps, earthtongues and other coral fungi, and finding one of those neighbours is a strong hint to slow down and search carefully.

The fungus itself is quiet in colour, which is why it is under-recorded. What you see is a tuft of slender, upright clubs pushing through short turf, all roughly the same height, standing close together like a small handful of pale wax tapers. The colour is the character the common name captures: a subdued smoky grey-buff, sometimes closer to pale pinkish-buff, dull ochre-cream, or the colour of weathered bone. In dull light against dry grass a colony can be nearly invisible until you are standing over it.

The tufts are usually dense, with anywhere from a handful to several dozen clubs rising from a small patch of soil, often visibly fused where they leave the ground. Colonies scatter across a favourable sward in loose groups, so once you find one tuft, quarter the immediate area on hands and knees.

Reading the Fruit Body

Each club stands 3 to 8 cm tall, occasionally reaching 12 cm in tall grass, and 2 to 6 mm thick. The form is cylindrical to narrowly spindle-shaped: slightly swollen through the middle, tapering gently to the base, and narrowing above to a tip that may be pointed or bluntly rounded. Many clubs are not perfectly round in section but flattened, grooved along one side, or slightly twisted, and some are longitudinally furrowed as though a fold had been pressed into them.

The surface is dry and matte, smooth, without granules, hairs or a powdery bloom. There is no separate cap, no gills, no pores, and no defined stipe. Colour is more or less uniform along the length, though the tips often darken in age to brown, sepia or grey-brown, and old clubs discolour generally from the top down as they begin to collapse.

Unbranched is the norm. An occasional club may split near the apex, but a repeatedly branching coral structure points to a different genus altogether.

Texture, Flesh and Interior

Texture is the character that keeps you out of the jelly fungi. Bend a club gently. Smoky Spindles is fragile and brittle: it snaps cleanly with a distinct break rather than flexing and rebounding. Handle a collection roughly and you will end up with a bag of fragments, which is why these are best carried in a rigid box with a little damp moss.

Split a club lengthways with a fingernail or a razor. The flesh is white to very pale grey, thin-walled, and either stuffed with a soft pith or hollow through the centre in mature specimens. There is no gel layer, no rind, no latex, and no colour change on cutting or bruising beyond the general darkening of the tips with age. Smell is faint or absent.

The base, where the clubs are fused, is often slightly paler and may be bound into the turf with fine white threads and soil particles. Lift a whole tuft with a knife rather than pulling it, so that the fused base stays intact for examination.

Taking and Reading a Spore Print

A spore print from a club fungus is straightforward if you use the right surface. Lay two or three whole clubs on their sides on black paper or dark glass, cover them with an upturned container so they do not dry out, and leave them for several hours or overnight in a cool place. The fertile surface covers the whole outside of the club, so the deposit appears as a faint white line or halo along the length of each one where it rested.

The print is white. That white deposit rules out several similar grassland fungi with coloured spores and, taken with the brittle unbranched clubs and the grassland habitat, keeps you inside the Clavaria and Clavulinopsis group. Under a microscope the spores are broadly elliptical and smooth, and the basidia are two-spored in Clavaria, which distinguishes the genus from the four-spored Clavulinopsis if you have the equipment to check.

Substrate, Season and Ecology

Smoky Spindles grows from soil among short grass and moss, never from wood. The habitat requirement is the important part: it is a species of old, undisturbed, nutrient-poor grassland with a long history of grazing or mowing and no fertiliser or ploughing. Churchyards, village greens, hill pastures, coastal turf, dune slacks and old lawns are the classic sites, and it will also appear on mossy banks and open woodland rides where the sward is thin.

The season is late summer through autumn, extending into early winter in mild coastal areas, with the best flushes after a spell of rain following a warm period. Colonies are perennial in the sense that the underground mycelium persists for many years, so a productive tuft site is usually worth revisiting annually.

Ecologically, the grassland Clavaria species are not decomposers of litter in the ordinary sense, and their nutrition is still debated. Isotope evidence suggests they occupy an unusual position, possibly with a biotrophic relationship involving grassland plants rather than living purely on dead organic matter. What is clear in practice is that they are indicators of grassland continuity: their presence signals a sward that has escaped agricultural improvement, and they disappear quickly where fertiliser or cultivation arrives.

Separating It from the Look-alikes

Clavaria fragilis, the white spindles, has the same growth form and habitat and is the commonest confusion. It is pure white, at most yellowing at the tips in age, and it lacks the smoky grey-buff cast entirely. Judge colour on fresh material in daylight against a white card, because memory is unreliable for such muted tones.

Clavaria acuta is white with a distinct narrowed stem-like base, generally grows singly or in small scattered groups on bare soil rather than in dense tufts in turf, and is shorter.

Clavulinopsis fusiformis forms tightly fused tufts of similar shape but is a vivid golden yellow, with tips that brown in age; Clavulinopsis helvola is bright yellow to orange-yellow and mostly single-stemmed; Clavulinopsis luteoalba is orange to apricot with paler tips. None of these approaches the drab grey of Smoky Spindles.

Clavaria zollingeri is violet to amethyst and usually branched, an easy exclusion.

Clavulina cinerea is genuinely grey and can be tempting, but it is a woodland species, its fruit bodies are branched into a small coral rather than simple spindles, and the flesh is firmer.

Macrotyphula juncea and the small Typhula species are far more slender, thread-like, whitish to pale tan, and grow from leaf litter and fallen twigs rather than from grassland turf.

Finally, Geoglossum and Trichoglossum earthtongues share the same fields but are dark brown to black, flattened and club-headed with a differentiated stem, and their flesh is tough rather than brittle.
