Snakeskin Grisette Identification Guide

A practical walk-through for recognising Amanita ceciliae in broadleaf woodland, from the ash-grey patches on its bronze cap to the crumbling, belted volva you have to dig for.

The Setting And The First Glance

You are most likely to meet the Snakeskin Grisette on a warm, damp day between midsummer and mid-autumn, walking a broadleaf wood on richer ground - beech and oak on limestone, hornbeam and lime on a heavy clay, sometimes birch on a woodland edge. It grows singly or in loose scatterings rather than troops, and it stands taller than most of the ringless Amanita species around it.

The impression from ten paces is of a large, slim, ringless mushroom with a bronze to warm-brown cap that looks as though someone shook wood ash over it, carried on a long pale stem that is banded and mottled like a shed snake skin. That silhouette - tall stem, no ring, deeply grooved cap rim - marks it as a grisette. The size and the grey decoration are what take it further.

Working Down The Cap

Start with colour. The cap is ochre-brown, bronze-brown, tawny-umber or greyish-brown, usually darkest over the centre and fading a little toward the rim. Across it lie irregular, soft, felty patches of grey to almost blackish material. These are remnants of the universal veil, and they matter: they are patchy and shapeless rather than neat pyramidal warts, and heavy rain strips them off entirely, so a weathered cap can look completely bald. Never write the species off because the patches are missing - look at the stem base instead.

Shape runs from egg-shaped through convex to almost flat, often with a low, broad, blunt umbo. Diameter is commonly 6-12 cm, occasionally more. The surface is slightly tacky in wet weather and dry otherwise.

Then read the margin, which is the single most reliable cap character. It is conspicuously grooved - tuberculate-striate - for a good quarter to a third of the way in from the edge. The grooves sit directly over the gill positions, so you can effectively count the gills from above. Hold the cap up against the sky and the striations show as a fluted, pie-crust rim.

Gills, Stem And The All-Important Base

Turn the cap over. The gills are free: they stop just short of the stem apex, leaving a narrow gap. They are crowded, soft, white to cream, with several ranks of short gills slotted between the full-length ones. Under a hand lens the gill edges look minutely woolly and are often faintly greyish. They do not stain when rubbed.

The stem is long, 8-20 cm, tapering gently upward, hollow or loosely stuffed. Its ground colour is whitish to pale grey, but it is overlaid with grey to grey-brown fibrous girdles, chevrons and zig-zag bands - the snakeskin of the name. There is no ring at any stage of development, and there never was one; do not mistake an adhering patch of veil for a ring.

Now the base, which is where this species separates itself from the rest of the grisettes. Most ringless Amanita species sit in a persistent, membranous, white sac. This one does not. Its volva is friable and crumbly, and instead of a bag it leaves a series of concentric grey to grey-brown belts and rings around a barely swollen stem base, with loose grey flakes strewn in the surrounding soil.

Because of that, plucking the mushroom destroys the evidence. Push a knife or trowel in 5-10 cm away from the stem and lever the whole base out of the ground, then brush the soil off gently rather than rubbing.

Flesh, Colour Change And Odour

Cut the specimen lengthways from cap centre to stem base. The flesh is white, soft, and stays white - there is no reddening, blueing, browning or yellowing on exposure. There is no latex. The stem interior may be stuffed with cottony fibres in young material and hollow in older ones. Odour is faint and nondescript. Any strong smell, any colour change, or any milky exudate means you are not holding this species.

Taking A Spore Print

The gills are free, so the print is easy. Slice the stem off flush with the cap, set the cap gill-side down on a sheet that is half white and half black, cover it with an upturned bowl or glass to stop draughts, and leave it four to eight hours somewhere cool.

The deposit is white. That already excludes a great many similar-looking mushrooms. If you have a microscope, mount the spores in Melzer's reagent: they are globose to very broadly ellipsoid, smooth, roughly 10-14 micrometres across, and inamyloid, meaning they stay pale rather than turning blue-black. Globose inamyloid spores confirm the section that contains the grisettes and rule out the amyloid-spored groups of Amanita.

Substrate And Season

This is an ectomycorrhizal fungus. It is always attached to living tree roots, always growing from soil or leaf litter, and never from wood. It favours neutral to base-rich soils under beech, oak, hornbeam, lime and birch, and turns up occasionally with conifers on similar ground. Fruiting runs from July into October, peaking after heavy late-summer rain. A specimen apparently on a log is either rooted in soil beneath it or is something else entirely.

Separating It From Its Closest Look-alikes On Structure Alone

Grisette (Amanita vaginata) is smaller, evenly grey, and its cap is essentially bald or carries at most one thin white veil patch. Its stem is smooth or faintly silky rather than banded, and its base sits in a persistent white membranous sac.

Tawny Grisette (Amanita fulva) is orange-brown to foxy, bald-capped, with a slender white sac at the base, often flushed rusty inside.

Amanita battarrae shows a distinctly two-toned, zoned cap - a darker central disc against an olive-brown outer zone - and again has a proper sac volva.

Panthercap (Amanita pantherina) has a clear membranous ring on the stem and small, pure white, evenly distributed warts, with the volva forming a distinct rim or collar around a bulbous base. Any ring immediately takes a specimen out of the grisettes.

Amanita franchetii also has a ring, plus yellowish veil warts and yellow flushes on the stem.

Volvopluteus gloiocephalus looks superficially similar - tall, ringless, sac-based - but its cap is greasy and grey-white, its gills turn distinctly pink with age, and its spore print is salmon-pink rather than white.

Parasols and shaggy Lepiota species have a ring, a scaly rather than patchy cap, and no volval material at the base at all.
