Sooty Milkcap Identification Guide
Identifying Lactarius fuliginosus by its dry velvety sooty-brown cap and the white latex that turns salmon-pink within a minute of exposure.
The Setting And The First Impression
You meet the Sooty Milkcap on the floor of a deciduous wood in late summer and autumn - most reliably in beech on chalk or limestone, also in oak, hornbeam and mixed broadleaf woodland on reasonably rich, neutral to calcareous soil. It comes up from soil and leaf litter, singly or in small loose groups, often on bare ground beside a path or on a shaded bank where the litter is thin.
The first impression is deliberately dull: a matt, sooty brown to greyish-fawn cap on a paler brown stem, with no gloss and no bright colour anywhere. It has none of the shine of a Russula and none of the zoning of the brightly coloured milkcaps. What gives it away, once you pick it up, is the surface texture - fine, dry and velvety, like suede or a moleskin - and the reaction of its milk.
Reading The Cap
The cap is 4-10 cm across, sometimes up to 12. It starts convex with an inrolled rim, then flattens, then usually becomes shallowly depressed in the centre while the margin stays gently downcurved or turns wavy and irregular. There is no distinct umbo, though a small central bump is sometimes present in young material.
Colour ranges through sooty brown, umber, dark fawn, greyish-brown and mouse-brown, characteristically a shade or two paler toward the margin and paler still overall in dry weather. Old or sun-bleached caps can fade to a dull milky-coffee tone.
Texture is the character to fix on. The cap is dry and finely velvety to minutely felted, never viscid, never shiny, and never zoned with concentric bands. Under a lens the surface has a fine granular or downy quality, and it is often wrinkled or finely rugulose, particularly around the centre where shallow radial creases fan outward. Run a fingertip across it: it should feel like fine velvet, not like plastic and not like a damp skin.
The Gills And The Latex Reaction
Turn it over. The gills are adnate to slightly decurrent, moderately crowded but not tightly packed, fairly narrow, and quite thin. They are pale cream to whitish when young and darken to pale ochre, buff or pinkish-cream with age, with several ranks of short gills between the full-length ones. The gill edges are entire.
Now do the test that defines the species. Take a sharp blade and cut across the gills near the stem, or simply nick a gill and watch.
Milk appears immediately - white, moderately copious, and unchanging for the first few seconds. Then, over the next thirty to ninety seconds, it turns. The droplets flush pink, then salmon, then a dull reddish or vinaceous shade, and at the same time the cut gill tissue and the surrounding flesh stain the same salmon-pink. Old bruises on the gills, slug grazing, and finger marks all show the same reddening after a few minutes.
This colour change is the anchor of the identification and separates the group from every other brown milkcap that does not redden.
Stem, Base And Flesh
The stem is 4-9 cm long and 0.8-2 cm thick, cylindrical or tapering slightly toward the base, and firm. It is coloured like the cap but usually a shade or two paler - fawn, pale greyish-brown, sometimes almost cream at the very apex - and it shares the cap's dry, finely velvety texture. There is no ring, no volva, no glutinous coating and no pitting or scrobiculate spotting of the kind seen in some other milkcaps. It is solid in young material and becomes hollow or chambered with age. The base is unswollen and often has litter and soil bound to it by white mycelial strands.
Slice the whole fruit body lengthways. The flesh is firm, white to pale cream, and brittle in the way Lactarius and Russula flesh always is - it snaps cleanly like chalk rather than tearing in fibres, because it is built from rounded cells rather than long hyphae. Watch the cut face: the same slow salmon-pink flush develops over a minute or two, usually strongest just under the gills and in the upper stem. Odour is mild, sometimes faintly aromatic or slightly of chicory.
Taking A Spore Print
Cut the stem flush, put the cap gill-side down on white paper, cover it, and leave it overnight. Milkcaps are slow to drop.
The deposit is cream to pale ochre or pale yellowish - not pure white. That in itself is a useful genus-level confirmation, because most white-spored gilled fungi that resemble it print pure white.
Under the microscope the spores are broadly ellipsoid to nearly round, around 7-9 by 6-7 micrometres, and ornamented with amyloid warts and ridges that form an incomplete network. Mounting in Melzer's reagent makes the ornament turn blue-black and is the standard way to look at it.
Substrate, Season And Ecology
The Sooty Milkcap is ectomycorrhizal. Its mycelium sheathes the fine root tips of broadleaf trees, especially beech, and exchanges soil-derived nutrients for the tree's photosynthetic sugars. That partnership explains its distribution precisely: it follows its hosts, it favours base-rich soils where beech thrives, and it never occurs on wood, on dung or in open grassland.
Fruiting runs from July through October, with the main flush in late summer and early autumn after sustained rain. Fruit bodies are reasonably long-lived by milkcap standards and often persist for a week or more, slowly staining reddish where damaged.
Separating It From Look-alikes By Structure
Lactarius azonites is the closest relative and the hardest call. It has a paler cap - whitish-grey, ash-grey or pale beige rather than sooty brown - and a distinctly whiter stem, and its latex generally reddens even faster and more intensely. Cap colour and the contrast between cap and stem are the practical separators.
Lactarius lignyotus is very dark, often blackish-brown, with a more deeply and coarsely wrinkled cap, a proportionally longer, strongly ribbed stem, and gill edges that are conspicuously dark brown. It associates with spruce in boreal and montane forest rather than with beech on chalk.
Lactarius picinus is also very dark and velvety but is a conifer species of upland spruce forest, with a more uniformly blackish-brown cap.
Lactarius acris has a viscid rather than velvety cap surface and a latex that reddens even more strongly, and its gills are more crowded.
Lactarius vietus and other grey milkcaps have viscid caps and latex that dries greyish rather than reddening.
Russula species growing alongside share the brittle flesh but produce no latex at all - the simplest check in the whole exercise.
Lactifluus vellereus and Lactifluus piperatus are large, white, firmly fleshed and velvety, but the colour difference is unmistakable and their latex does not redden.
