Summer Bolete Identification Guide

Field notes on Boletus reticulatus: a dry, finely cracked suede cap, unchanging white flesh, and a pale raised net running the full length of the stipe, weeks ahead of the main bolete season.

The First Impression

The Summer Bolete has a season that is itself a clue. While most large boletes wait for the damp of September, Boletus reticulatus fruits early — from late May in warm years, with a strong showing in June and July — in mature oak and beech woodland, often on warm, well-drained ground and frequently in open, sunlit positions along woodland edges and rides.

What you see first is bulk. This is a heavy, solid mushroom: a broad, pale brown cap that looks matt and dusty rather than shiny, over a thick, barrel-shaped or club-shaped stipe. Crouch down and look at the stipe surface. If a fine, pale, raised mesh runs from the very top of the stipe all the way down toward the base, you are already most of the way to a name.

Reading the Cap

Caps run 8–20 cm across, occasionally larger, hemispherical when young and expanding to broadly convex. The colour is a soft mid-brown: hazel, tan, biscuit or greyish-brown, usually fairly even, sometimes with paler patches.

Texture is the diagnostic point. The cuticle is dry and finely velvety, like chamois or suede, and it is never sticky or greasy — even soaked with rain it stays matt. In warm weather the surface characteristically breaks into a fine network of shallow cracks, giving an appearance somewhere between crazed glaze and dried mud, with pale flesh showing in the fissures. The margin is usually even and does not overhang the tubes by much in maturity.

The Pore Surface

Turn the cap over and read the tube layer. In young specimens the pores are white to cream and so tightly packed that the surface looks like a smooth pad; with age they turn pale yellow and finally a dull olive-yellow. Pores are small and round, roughly two or three to the millimetre, and the tube layer is deep — often 1–2 cm in a big cap — and can be pulled away from the flesh in one sheet, as is typical of the family.

Press the pores hard with a fingertip and watch for thirty seconds. In B. reticulatus there should be no blue reaction, at most a slight brownish or ochre discoloration from handling. Any prompt blue-green staining moves you out of this group entirely.

Stipe and Base

The stipe is 6–15 cm tall and 3–6 cm thick, stout, often swollen or club-shaped when young and becoming more cylindrical as it stretches. Ground colour is pale brown, ochre or buff — usually a shade darker and warmer than the white-stiped Penny Bun.

Now the key character. Over that ground colour lies a raised reticulum: a fine, pale, net-like ridge pattern with narrow, elongated meshes. In this species the net is normally conspicuous over the whole length of the stipe, right down to the base, and it is often paler than the background, standing out clearly. Compare with a relative in which netting is confined to the upper third and fades below, and the difference is obvious once you have seen both.

The base sits in soil, sometimes with white mycelial cords binding leaf litter, but there is no volva, sac or ring.

Flesh and Colour Change

Cut a fruitbody in half from cap to stipe base. The flesh is white, thick and firm, more marbled and fibrous in the stipe, and it stays white on exposure — no blueing, no reddening, no pink under the cuticle. Leave the cut face for five minutes and check again; only a faint creamy or vinaceous tint should appear, and even that is slight. The odour is mild and pleasantly fungal.

Cut across the tube layer as well. The junction between white flesh and the tube bases stays pale; a blue line there would be significant.

Taking a Spore Print

Sever the cap and lay it pore-side down on white paper under a bowl for four to eight hours — big boletes drop slowly. The deposit is olive-brown to snuff-brown, sometimes with a distinctly greenish cast when thick. Under a microscope the spores are smooth, narrowly spindle-shaped and roughly 13–17 × 4.5–5.5 µm.

Substrate and Season

Boletus reticulatus is ectomycorrhizal, associating principally with oak and beech, less commonly with sweet chestnut, hornbeam and lime. It has a warmth-loving distribution, so productive ground is southern-facing woodland slopes, old parkland with veteran oaks, wood-pasture and warm woodland margins on well-drained soil. Fruitbodies appear singly or in small groups near the trunk drip-line and beyond, from late spring through summer and into early autumn, so its main flush precedes the general bolete season by several weeks. Because it is mycorrhizal it will not appear on stumps, logs or wood chip.

Separating the Look-alikes

  • Penny Bun (Boletus edulis) — the crucial comparison. Its cap is smoother and slightly greasy when damp, often darker chestnut with a characteristic thin whitish rim at the margin, and it cracks far less. The stipe reticulum is finer, whitish, and normally confined to the upper third. Its main season is autumn.
  • Dark Cep (Boletus aereus) — much darker, a dull bronze to blackish-brown cap, usually with the net restricted to the upper stipe and often browner; a species of warm oak woods.
  • Pine Bolete (Boletus pinophilus) — deep red-brown, often lumpy cap, reddish-brown stipe with a fine concolorous net, and strictly associated with conifers.
  • Bitter Bolete (Tylopilus felleus) — a common trap. The netting is coarse, dark brown and strongly raised against a paler stipe, the pores develop a pink or flesh tint with age, and the spore print is pinkish-brown, not olive.
  • Boletes with red pores (Rubroboletus, Neoboletus and allies) — orange to red pore surfaces and flesh that turns blue quickly.
  • Birch and Orange Boletes (Leccinum spp.) — the stipe carries small, dark, projecting scabers in vertical rows, not a raised mesh, and the flesh generally darkens on cutting.

Common questions

How do I tell the Summer Bolete from the Penny Bun?
Look at the extent of the stipe netting and the cap surface. Boletus reticulatus carries a conspicuous pale raised net over the entire stipe and has a dry, suede-like cap that cracks finely in warm weather. Boletus edulis usually has netting only on the upper third, a smoother cap that becomes slightly greasy when damp, and a pale rim at the cap margin.
Do the pores or flesh change colour when handled?
No. The pores show at most a slight brownish discoloration from bruising, and the white flesh stays white on cutting. Prompt blue-green staining of either surface indicates a different group of boletes altogether.
