Terracotta Hedgehog Identification Guide
A field walkthrough for the Terracotta Hedgehog, the small apricot-orange mushroom with a brittle cap and a dense pelt of soft pinkish-cream spines instead of gills.
The First Impression
The Terracotta Hedgehog reads at first glance as a small, plain, apricot-coloured mushroom sitting in moss — and then you tip it over and the underside is wrong in the most useful possible way. Instead of gills or pores there is a dense pelt of soft spines hanging down like the nap of a brush. That single feature does most of the identification work, and everything after it is about which spined mushroom you are holding.
The setting is typically a mossy, humid patch of woodland floor: beech and oak on damp ground, mixed woodland with a good moss layer, or conifer plantation where needle litter and moss have knitted together. The fungus fruits in small scattered groups or short lines, occasionally in loose rings, and the caps are often half-buried in moss so that only the orange disc shows.
Reading the Cap
Expect a cap of two to seven centimetres, small and neat by comparison with its better-known relative. The colour is the reason for the name: a warm terracotta, orange-tan or apricot-brown, usually fairly even across the cap and noticeably more saturated than the pale cream-buff of the larger hedgehog species.
Shape is convex at first, then flattening, and mature caps very often develop a shallow central depression or become slightly funnelled. Compared with its relative the outline stays comparatively regular and rounded — lobed, wavy, kidney-shaped and fused caps do occur but are much less the rule. The surface is dry, matt to very finely velvety, and often has a faint suede quality when you draw a finger across it. The margin is thin, at first inrolled, later spreading and sometimes irregular.
The flesh is brittle. Try to bend the cap edge and it snaps rather than tears, which is a good general pointer to this group and away from the tough, corky brown-spored toothed fungi.
Reading the Spines
Turn the cap over and study the teeth carefully, because their colour, length and attachment are all diagnostic.
They are crowded, soft, tapering to fine points, and typically two to six millimetres long — shorter than in the larger relative. Colour is pale cream to a distinctly pinkish-buff or salmon tone, often warmer than the cream spines of look-alikes and sometimes echoing the cap colour faintly. They are extremely fragile: brush the underside with a fingertip and a dusting of broken spines will come away, which is a good confirmatory test.
Now check where the spines stop. In this species they typically end at or just short of the top of the stipe, or run only very slightly onto it. That subtle difference from the strongly decurrent spines of some close relatives is genuinely useful, though it varies enough that it should be one point among several rather than the whole argument.
Stipe, Base and Colour Change
The stipe is short, three to six centimetres, cylindrical or slightly swollen below, usually central but sometimes set a little off-centre. It is white to pale cream at first, often flushing pale ochre or orange-buff with age or where handled, and it is solid and brittle throughout. There is no ring, no volva and no veil tissue of any kind. The very base is often clothed in white mycelial down that binds moss and litter.
Cut a fruitbody in half lengthways. The flesh is white to very pale cream, thick in the cap centre, and brittle-fibrous in the stipe. The important observation is a slow discolouration: cut and bruised surfaces, and the stipe of older fruitbodies, tend to develop dull orange-ochre to brownish-orange stains over a quarter of an hour or so. This is a gradual browning-orange, not an instant blue, green or red flush, and its presence supports the identification.
There is no milk or latex, and the smell is faint and pleasantly fungal.
Taking a Spore Print
Cut the cap free just below the spines and set it teeth-down on a black surface under a cover for four to eight hours. The deposit is white to very pale cream. If you see brown, the mushroom is not in this group at all and you are almost certainly in the tough, brown-spored toothed fungi instead.
Under a microscope the spores are smooth, broadly ellipsoid to almost round, thin-walled and inamyloid, with a small apiculus. The exact spore length-to-width ratio is one of the characters used to separate very closely related species in modern treatments, so measuring twenty spores is worthwhile if you want a firm name at species level rather than at group level.
Substrate and Season
This is a mycorrhizal fungus that partners tree roots, so it appears on soil and moss, never on wood. It associates with a range of broadleaved and coniferous trees — beech, oak, birch, hazel, spruce and pine among them — and favours humid, sheltered, mossy ground, including old woodland banks, shaded rides and moss-carpeted slopes. It shows a preference for slightly richer, moisture-retentive soils.
The season runs from late summer through autumn, usually peaking a little later than midsummer species, and fruitbodies persist reasonably well, hardening and darkening as they age rather than dissolving.
Separating It From Look-alikes
The Wood Hedgehog is the constant comparison. It is bigger, with caps commonly reaching ten to fifteen centimetres, much paler — cream, pale buff or faintly pinkish rather than terracotta — and its cap is characteristically irregular, lobed and often fused with neighbours. Its spines are longer and typically run distinctly down onto the stipe, and its stipe is stouter and more often eccentric. Colour, size and cap outline together are usually enough in the field.
Several recently recognised segregate species sit between these two in appearance. Some are white to ivory throughout, some have strongly decurrent spines with a small orange cap, and separating them reliably requires spore measurements. If you are working carefully, record cap colour, spine length, spine attachment and spore dimensions, and be willing to leave a collection at group level.
The Sarcodon and Hydnellum toothed fungi also carry spines, but they are a different proposition: tough, leathery to corky rather than brittle, usually dull brown, purplish or greyish, often with scaly or lumpy caps, sometimes with zoned flesh in section, and they give a brown spore print. Break a piece — brittleness alone separates them.
The Ear-pick fungus is tiny, stalked laterally, brown and felty, and grows on buried pine cones. Hericium species have spines but no cap and no stipe, growing as cascading masses from wood. And the small orange-brown Rickenella-type mushrooms in moss, which occupy the same microhabitat, have ordinary gills once you look underneath.
