A step-by-step guide to The Blusher, the common ringed woodland amanita whose dull pinkish-brown cap carries greyish-pink warts and whose cut flesh slowly flushes wine-red.
The First Impression
The Blusher is a substantial, ringed, warty-capped woodland mushroom in dull pinkish-brown tones, and the thing that makes it identifiable is not any one structure but a colour reaction. Wherever the fruitbody has been damaged — by a slug, by a beetle grub, by your own thumbnail — the flesh slowly turns a dirty wine-pink to reddish-brown. Learn to look for that discolouration first and the rest of the reading falls into place.
You will typically be standing in mixed woodland on the sort of ground that supports a lot of mycorrhizal fungi: oak and beech on loam, birch on sandier soil, pine and spruce plantations, the edges of woodland rides, or well-treed parkland. Fruitbodies come up singly or in scattered groups, and it is one of the commonest large mushrooms of the summer and autumn woodland floor across its range.
Reading the Cap
Caps run from five to fifteen centimetres, occasionally larger, starting hemispherical, becoming convex and finally flattened with a slightly depressed centre in old material. The ground colour is a muted reddish-brown, flesh-brown or dull pinkish-tan, often paler toward the margin and frequently blotched with reddish stains where it has been grazed or weathered.
Scattered across the surface are the remains of the universal veil: small, irregular, angular to felty warts or patches, greyish-pink, dingy cream or pale flesh-coloured — never chalk-white and never bright yellow. They sit loosely on the cuticle and rain washes them off, so a heavily weathered cap can be almost bare. Their tone is a useful separator, so look at several fruitbodies before deciding.
The cap margin is smooth or at most very faintly grooved for a short distance. It is not conspicuously striate. That matters, because the closest confusions differ in exactly this character. The surface is dry to slightly tacky in wet weather.
Reading the Gills
The gills are free from the stipe, crowded, fairly broad, soft, and white to very pale cream when fresh. Look along the gill faces of an older fruitbody and you should find scattered reddish or rusty-pink spotting and staining, particularly toward the margin and wherever slugs have worked. The gill edges are minutely floccose under a lens. There is no pink or brown maturation of the gills themselves — any colour there is staining, not spore colour.
Stipe, Ring and Base
The stipe is stout, seven to fifteen centimetres tall, tapering upward from a swollen base, white at the apex and progressively flushed pink to reddish-brown downward, often noticeably so in older material.
The ring is large, membranous, pendulous and skirt-like, hanging near the top of the stipe. Look at its upper surface under a lens or in raking light: it is distinctly grooved or striate, marked by fine radial lines. That grooved upper ring surface is a good structural character.
Below the ring the stipe often shows faint bands or girdles. Now excavate the base — dig it out rather than snapping — and examine it closely. It is swollen into a club-shaped or ovoid bulb, but it does not carry a free, sac-like volva and it does not have a sharply defined rim or collar sitting on top of a flattened bulb. Instead you should find scaly, concentric belts or rings of scurfy veil tissue plastered around the upper part of the bulb, often pink-tinged. The distinction between a rimmed bulb and a belted bulb is one you should practise deliberately.
The Blushing Test and Flesh
Slice the fruitbody in half from cap to base and lay it open. The flesh is white, thick and firm. Wait. Over five to twenty minutes the cut surfaces should develop a slow flush of pale pink deepening toward wine-red or reddish-brown, most obvious in the stipe base and in tissue that insects have already tunnelled. Old larval galleries in the stipe are usually already stained a strong rusty-pink, which is often the quickest way to see the reaction on an otherwise unhelpful specimen.
Handle the cap surface firmly and the bruised area will also redden over time. The reaction is reliable in fresh material but sluggish in cold weather and hard to see in very old, already-discoloured fruitbodies, so use a young specimen for the test. There is no strong smell.
Taking a Spore Print
Cut the cap free and place it gills-down on dark paper or glass, covered, for four to eight hours. The print is white and stays white. Any hint of pink, brown or rust means you are not in this genus.
Microscopically, the spores are smooth, ellipsoid and amyloid — they stain blue-black in Melzer's iodine reagent. That amyloid reaction, combined with a ringed stipe, a belted bulb and a reddening context, is a firm placement.
Substrate and Season
This is a mycorrhizal species forming partnerships with a wide range of trees, which is why it is so widespread: oak, beech, birch, hornbeam, sweet chestnut, pine and spruce all serve. It is tolerant of both acid and neutral soils and appears in ancient woodland, secondary woodland, plantations, parkland and large gardens alike.
Fruiting is long, from early summer through to the first hard frosts of late autumn, with peaks after warm rain. Fruitbodies are robust and persist for a week or more, becoming steadily more discoloured and slug-grazed with time.
Separating It From Look-alikes
The Grey Spotted Amanita is the most frequent mix-up. It is greyer and browner overall, with grey to greyish-brown veil warts, a grooved ring, and a stipe base that tapers into the soil with a somewhat rooting, ringed appearance. Decisively, its flesh does not redden — it stays white or discolours only faintly greyish. Cut it and wait; the absence of the blush is the answer.
The Panthercap is darker, a colder umber to date-brown, and its veil warts are pure chalk-white and often arranged in rough concentric rings. Its cap margin is distinctly and finely grooved, its ring is not striate on the upper surface, and its stipe base is a neatly rounded bulb topped by a sharp, free rim or collar — a gutter you can slip a fingernail under. Its flesh stays white.
Franchet's Amanita shares the general build but has bright sulphur-yellow to olive-yellow warts and yellow flecks on the ring and stipe base.
Away from the genus, parasols have free gills and a white print but their ring is double and slides freely along the stipe, their caps are coarsely scaly on a distinct pale ground, and there is no bulb with veil belts. Field mushroom relatives are ruled out at once by a spore print that turns deep chocolate-brown and by gills that pass through pink to dark brown.
