Umber-brown Puffball Identification Guide

A field routine for Lycoperdon umbrinum: dark converging spines on a pear-shaped body, a chambered sterile base revealed by a vertical cut, and a purple-brown spore mass in mossy conifer woods.

Where you meet it

The Umber-brown Puffball is a fungus of mossy, acid woodland floors, and most finds happen in conifer plantations and old spruce or pine stands where a thick carpet of moss and needle litter covers the ground. It also appears in mixed woods, on heathy banks and along shaded forest tracks. Fruit bodies come singly or, more often, in loose scattered troops of a dozen or more spread across a few square metres of moss.

The first impression is of a small brown pear or top standing upright in the moss, its upper half looking dark and bristly, its lower half narrowing into a short thick stalk-like neck. It is smaller and darker than most of the puffballs people notice: typically 2 to 5 cm across the head and 3 to 6 cm tall overall.

Reading the outer surface

Get close with a lens, because the ornamentation carries most of the identification. The upper part of a young fruit body is densely covered in short, slender, erect spines, mixed with finer granules and warts. Their colour is the point: they are dark, running from mid brown through umber and coffee to almost blackish-brown, and they contrast with the paler ground colour of the wall beneath them. In many specimens the spines lean together in small groups so that their tips touch, forming little converging pyramids or tufts.

Young fruit bodies can be paler, sometimes greyish or fawn, and darken as they age. Rub the spines with a thumb; they detach fairly easily, and as they come away they leave the underlying inner wall exposed. That inner wall is smooth to very finely roughened, brown to grey-brown, and shows at most a faint pattern of scars rather than a bold net or a clear map of polygons.

Shape, base and the vertical cut

Shape matters as much as ornament. Lycoperdon umbrinum is not a sphere. It is subglobose to pear-shaped or top-shaped, with a well developed, thickened, stalk-like base that narrows into the moss and is usually rooted by white mycelial threads binding needles and moss stems.

Now make the decisive cut: slice a mature fruit body vertically, from the apex straight down through the base. You should see two clearly different zones. The upper part is filled with the spore mass. The lower part, the sterile base, is a distinct spongy pad of small chambers that never produces spores, and in this species it is well developed, occupying roughly the lower third to half of the section, and coloured olive-brown to purplish-brown or dull umber. There is often a thin membrane, the diaphragm, separating the two zones. A puffball with a prominent chambered sterile base is not a Bovista and not a Scleroderma.

The spore mass and colour change

In a young fruit body the interior above the sterile base is pure white, firm and even-textured, like dense foam. As it ripens it passes through cream and yellow-olive to olive-brown and finally to a dry, dusty, distinctly purple-tinged brown. That final purple-brown or vinaceous-umber shade is a helpful character; several similar species finish in a plainer olive-brown or a warm yellow-brown.

Cut flesh does not flush a new colour. A young white interior that stains yellow or pink within a minute belongs elsewhere. What does happen in older specimens is that the whole interior dries and the fibrous capillitium becomes obvious as a springy brown wool threaded through the powder.

Getting spores out and reading them

There is no conventional spore print to take, because the spores are held inside a closed chamber. Instead, let the fruit body ripen until it develops its apical opening: a small, round to slightly torn pore forms at the very top of the head, and the wall around it becomes papery. Hold the fruit body over a sheet of white paper or a microscope slide and tap or gently squeeze it; a cloud of fine brown dust is released.

Under the microscope you should find spores that are globose, about 4 to 5.5 micrometres in diameter, and clearly ornamented with small warts or spines rather than smooth. Mixed with them is the capillitium: brown, thick-walled, sparsely branched threads that in Lycoperdon are pierced by scattered small pores along their length. Loose fragments of the sterile base tissue and short spore stalks often come away with the dust.

Substrate, season and ecology

Lycoperdon umbrinum is a saprotroph. Its mycelium grows through moss, needle litter and the humus layer, decomposing dead plant material and returning nutrients to the forest floor. It is not attached to living roots, and it does not fruit from wood.

Habitat preference is for acid, humus-rich, often moss-dominated ground under conifers, particularly spruce and pine, though it does occur in mixed and broadleaved woodland and occasionally in dune scrub. It is widespread across northern and montane regions.

The season runs from late summer through autumn, sometimes into early winter in mild areas. Mature fruit bodies are tough and persist as brown, hollow, papery shells for months after they have finished shedding, so empty husks in spring point to good habitat.

Separating it from the closest look-alikes

Lycoperdon perlatum, the commonest woodland puffball, has a similar pear shape and a similar sterile base, but its ornamentation is entirely different: it carries pale, whitish to buff, conical detachable warts of two distinct sizes, and when the large warts fall they leave a clean network of pale scars, so that the mature surface looks like a pockmarked map. Its ripe spore mass is olive-brown rather than purple-tinged, and it is never dark-spined.

Lycoperdon nigrescens (also treated as L. foetidum) is the hardest species to separate. It too has dark converging spines. Look for a blacker, more strongly contrasting spine colour, spines that leave a much more conspicuous reticulate scar pattern on the exposed wall, a generally smaller and more globose body with a less developed sterile base, and a distinctive strong odour in fresh material.

Lycoperdon molle has short, soft, fragile pale brown to greyish spines that fall very easily and leave almost no pattern, a paler overall look, and a purple-brown spore mass; it is a species of richer, often broadleaved woodland.

Apioperdon pyriforme grows in dense clusters directly on rotten wood, stumps and buried timber, with conspicuous white rhizomorph cords at the base. Its surface is granular to minutely warted, never spiny, and its ripe spore mass is a plain olive-brown.

Bovista species are separated by the vertical cut: they have no sterile base at all, their spore mass fills the whole body, and mature specimens detach and roll free with a smooth, papery, often bronze or lead-coloured inner wall.

Scleroderma species share the woodland habitat but have a thick, rigid, corky wall that is usually coarsely scaly, and a section through a young one shows firm dark purple-black marbled tissue instead of a soft white spore mass with a separate chambered base.

How do I confirm this is a Lycoperdon and not a Bovista?
Cut the fruit body vertically from top to bottom. Lycoperdon umbrinum has a well developed sterile base, a spongy pad of small chambers filling the lower third to half of the section and coloured olive to purple-brown, with the spore mass sitting above it. Bovista species have no sterile base at all; their spore mass fills the entire interior and they detach and tumble when mature.
What do the spines look like up close?
Short, slender and erect, densely set over the upper surface and mixed with fine granules. Their colour is the key: dark brown, umber or nearly blackish-brown against a paler wall. Groups of spines often lean together so their tips converge into small tufts. When they fall they leave the inner wall smooth to faintly scarred, without the bold pale network left by Lycoperdon perlatum.
