Velvet Roll-rim Identification Guide

How to recognise Tapinella atrotomentosa in the field, from the heavy rusty cap and inrolled margin down to the unmistakable blackish velvet stalk planted in a conifer stump.

Standing in Front of a Conifer Stump

The setting does half the identification. You are in pine or spruce forest, usually plantation or old managed woodland, and in front of you is a stump — cut, weathered, greying, with the bark sloughing off. Around its base, or straight out of the crumbling heartwood, sits something heavy and solid. It does not look like a delicate woodland agaric. It looks structural, almost engineered, with a thick fleshy cap the colour of rusted iron and a stalk so stout it seems disproportionate.

That first impression of bulk matters. Fruit bodies commonly reach ten to twenty centimetres across, occasionally more, and the cap flesh can be two centimetres thick at the centre. A specimen of this size feels dense in the hand, and dropping it on soft ground produces a solid thud rather than a rustle. Very few wood-inhabiting gilled fungi in conifer forest have this build.

Reading the Cap

Begin at the margin. In young and middle-aged specimens the cap edge is strongly rolled under, tucked in tightly enough that it forms a thick rounded lip which hides the outer gills entirely. Even in old, expanded, wavy specimens some remnant of that inrolled edge usually survives on part of the circumference. Run a thumb along it — the roll is firm and rubbery, not a fragile inturned membrane.

The upper surface is dry and matt, finished with a fine felt that in fresh material behaves like short-pile fabric: brush it one way and it darkens slightly, brush it back and the tone returns. Colour sits in the ochre to rusty-brown range, sometimes warmer and more tawny at the margin, sometimes almost umber at the centre. With age and weathering the felt wears away in patches and the cap can crack into coarse plates, particularly on exposed stumps in dry spells. Shape starts convex and cushion-like and becomes flat, then irregularly depressed and lobed, so that a mature cap is rarely a neat circle.

The Gills and a Test Worth Doing

Turn it over. The gills are crowded, narrow, and run distinctly down onto the stalk, and near the stalk they fork and cross-connect into a shallow net of interlinked ridges rather than remaining as clean separate plates. Colour is pale cream to a warm yellowish-buff, deepening with age, and bruising or handling turns the damaged areas a dull rusty brown after several minutes.

Now do the separation test. Push a thumbnail under the gills at the cap margin and lift. In this fungus the entire gill layer peels away from the cap flesh as a coherent sheet, cleanly, like felt lifting off a board. Most true agarics will not do this — their gills are integral with the cap tissue and tear when you try. This peelable hymenium places the fungus in the Tapinella and Paxillus alliance immediately, before you have looked at anything else.

The Stalk: The Feature That Names the Species

Everything about the stalk is diagnostic. It is short relative to the cap and extremely thick, often three to five centimetres in diameter, frequently attached off-centre and sometimes almost at the cap edge, so the mushroom leans out from its stump like a bracket on a post. Its surface carries a dense, deep, dark brown to blackish velvet — genuinely furry to the touch, much darker than the cap, and covering the whole stalk from the gill line to the base. That black velvet against a rusty cap is the single character that carries the English name and the specific epithet alike.

The base is usually swollen or root-like, driven into rotten wood or into soil directly above buried roots. Excavate it rather than snapping it off: tracing the base to a buried root or a decayed stump fragment often supplies the substrate evidence you need. There is no ring and no volva.

Flesh and Cut Surfaces

Split a fruit body lengthwise with a firm knife. The flesh is thick, dense and pale cream to whitish, fibrous in the stalk and softer in the cap. On exposure it may slowly discolour to a pale brownish or faintly greyish tone, but there is no dramatic instant colour change, no blueing and no latex. Odour is faint and earthy at best. The stalk flesh is solid throughout, never hollow.

Taking a Spore Print

Use a mature specimen, cut the cap free of the stalk, and place it gill-side down on white paper under a covering bowl for six to twelve hours. Because the caps are large and fleshy, they release spores generously and the deposit is often visible in under two hours. Read it dry, in daylight, gathered into a heap. The colour is a warm yellowish-brown to clay-brown, distinctly pigmented but never the purple-brown of Stropharia relatives nor the bright rust of Gymnopilus. Under a lens the deposit looks smooth and even.

Substrate, Season and Ecology

This is a wood-rotting saprotroph, not a root partner. It grows on the stumps, buried roots and large decaying trunk fragments of conifers, with pine and spruce the usual hosts, and it can also appear apparently terrestrially where the wood it is decomposing lies out of sight beneath the soil surface. It fruits from midsummer into autumn, often returning to the same stump for several consecutive years as the wood is progressively broken down, and specimens frequently appear in small clustered groups of two to five sharing a root system. Long after the visible fruit bodies collapse, blackened remnants of the stalk velvet can persist on the stump.

Separating It From Look-alikes on Structure Alone

Brown roll-rim, Paxillus involutus. The closest structural match, sharing the inrolled margin, decurrent forking gills and peelable gill layer. Separate it by substrate and stalk: Paxillus involutus grows from soil in mycorrhizal association with broadleaved trees, especially birch, and its stalk is smooth, slender and more or less the same brown as the cap, with no black velvet at all. Its gills also bruise a stronger reddish-brown, and its cap is usually smaller and more olivaceous.

Oyster roll-rim, Tapinella panuoides. Same genus and same peelable gills, but the fruit body is fan- or shell-shaped, attached laterally to the substrate with no proper stalk or only a rudimentary stub, and it favours worked conifer timber such as fence posts and boards. Nothing in it approaches the bulk of the Velvet Roll-rim.

Phyllotopsis nidulans. Orange-yellow, densely hairy, bracket-like and stalkless, with a pinkish spore deposit. The hairy surface may briefly recall the velvet, but the absence of a stalk settles it instantly.

Pholiota and Gymnopilus species on conifer stumps. These share the general rusty tone and wood habit but have gills that are attached or notched rather than deeply decurrent, cannot be peeled away as a sheet, usually retain a ring or ring zone from a partial veil, and give a brighter rust-brown to orange-brown print. None has a black velvet stalk.

Field Checklist

Heavy rusty felted cap; persistently inrolled margin; crowded decurrent forking gills that lift off in one sheet; a thick, often off-centre stalk clothed in blackish velvet; pale firm flesh; yellowish clay-brown spore print; conifer stump or buried conifer root. That combination has no realistic competitor.

Is it a wood decayer or a tree partner?
It is a saprotroph that decays dead conifer wood, particularly the stumps and root systems left after felling.
