White Birch Bolete Identification Guide

How to work through a pale bolete standing in sphagnum under birch, using cap colour, pale scabers, the blue-green stipe base and an olive-brown spore print.

The Setting Does Half the Work

You almost never find this bolete on firm, dry ground. The habitat is wet: the sphagnum fringe of a bog, a damp birch carr where the ground gives underfoot, a peaty hollow in acid birch woodland, or a mossy ditch line with birch leaning over it. Your boots sink slightly, the moss is saturated, and the only tree that matters is birch. A pale, whitish bolete standing in sphagnum under birch is Leccinum holopus far more often than it is anything else, and every subsequent character you check is really a confirmation of that first habitat-driven call.

First Impression

The overall look is tall, slim and pallid. Where its brown relatives look sturdy and workmanlike, this one looks bleached and slightly wilted even when fresh. Total height is usually 6-15 cm with a cap of 4-10 cm, and the proportions run to a long stipe relative to a modest cap. In wet weather the cap surface is faintly tacky; in dry weather it is matt and finely felted. Fruit bodies are often half-swallowed by sphagnum, so a small white dome sitting in green moss is all you see until you part the moss around it.

Reading the Cap

Start convex and watch it flatten. Young caps are hemispherical to convex with the margin tucked under; mature ones become broadly convex to almost flat, often a little uneven or shallowly pitted. The surface is smooth to minutely felted, never scaly, never sharply zoned.

Colour is the character the common name rests on: white to cream or dirty ivory, frequently washed with pale straw, and in many collections tinted a faint grey-green, blue-green or watery pale turquoise, particularly toward the centre and in age. That greenish cast on a whitish cap is a good supporting clue. The cap skin usually overhangs the pore surface slightly as a narrow sterile rim, and it does not peel away in clean strips the way a Suillus cap does.

The Spore-Bearing Surface

Turn it over and you find tubes and pores, not gills. The pores are small and round, whitish at first, ageing to pale grey-buff or dingy cream, and they are usually depressed in a shallow moat around the top of the stipe. Pressing them firmly may raise a dull brownish or faintly greenish mark, but the reaction is weak and unreliable, and no strong instant colour change occurs. The tube layer pulls away from the cap flesh fairly easily with thumb pressure, which is a general bolete character worth demonstrating to yourself once.

Stipe and Scabers

The stipe is the genus test. It is long, slender, often slightly curved, tapering upward or nearly equal, and its white ground colour is broken up by scabers: the small tufted scaly points that define Leccinum. In this species the scabers begin whitish to very pale buff, so a young specimen can look almost smooth and clean white from a distance, and they darken through grey-brown to dull olive-brown as the fruit body matures. If you find no scabers at all on close inspection, you are not in Leccinum.

The base is not bulbous and there is no volva or ring. What the base does offer is colour: scratch or slice the bottom two or three centimetres and a blue-green to dark green tint very often appears.

Flesh and Colour Change

Cut a whole fruit body in half lengthways with a knife and lay it open. The flesh is white, soft, noticeably watery, and spongy in the cap of older specimens. Watch the cut face for fifteen to twenty minutes rather than glancing once. Two changes are common: a slow pinkish, salmon or dull vinaceous flush in the cap flesh and upper stipe, and a blue-green to dark green discolouration low in the stipe. In cold or dry weather both reactions can be feeble or entirely absent, so their absence proves nothing while their presence is supportive.

Taking and Reading a Spore Print

Cut the cap free, lay it pore-side down on white paper, cover it with a bowl to hold humidity, and leave it overnight. Boletes drop generously and you should have a good deposit by morning.

The print is olive-brown to ochre-brown, often described as snuff-brown, which is the standard Boletaceae colour. A white, pink or black print rules the family out entirely. Under the microscope the spores are long and fusiform, smooth, and pale yellow-brown in water, typically 15-20 micrometres long.

Substrate and Season

The species is ectomycorrhizal and, as far as anyone can tell, strictly tied to birch. It fruits from the soil, never from wood, and it prefers acid, peaty, permanently damp ground: sphagnum lawns, bog margins, wet heath with scattered birch, and boggy woodland hollows. Its range is north temperate to boreal. Fruiting runs from late summer through autumn, extending later in mild wet seasons. Fruit bodies come singly or scattered rather than in tight clumps, and a productive patch of moss tends to produce again in following years.

Separating It from Look-alikes on Morphology Alone

Leccinum scabrum is the default comparison. It has a brown to grey-brown cap from the outset, its scabers are dark from an early stage, it grows on firmer ground under birch as readily as in bogs, and its stipe base does not usually turn blue-green.

Leccinum variicolor also produces a strong blue-green base and lives in damp birch ground, but its cap is distinctly mottled, marbled in grey-brown and off-white rather than uniformly pale, so the cap colour separates the two on sight.

Leccinum niveum and the dwarf-birch associates of arctic and alpine ground are smaller, stouter and tied to Betula nana in tundra or montane heath rather than to full-sized birch in lowland bog.

Away from Leccinum, several genera can be dismissed quickly. Boletus, Butyriboletus and Caloboletus species have smooth or net-patterned stipes with no scabers. Tylopilus develops pinkish pores in age and again lacks true scabers. Leccinellum species associate with hornbeam, hazel or oak and carry yellowish tones in the flesh. Suillus species have sticky caps, larger angular pores and often a ring or glandular dots.

A Practical Field Sequence

Confirm birch overhead and wet, mossy or peaty ground underfoot. Check the cap for a pale, faintly greenish, unscaled surface. Turn it over: small round whitish pores, not gills. Look for scabers on the stipe, pale in youth. Slice from top to bottom and watch for a pinkish cap flush and a green base. Take an overnight print and confirm it is olive-brown.
