White Dunce Cap Identification Guide
How to recognise the White Dunce Cap (Conocybe apala), the frail, chalk-white conical lawn mushroom that appears at dawn and collapses by noon. Covers the pruinose thread-like stem, the rusty mature gills and the fast spore print that pins it down.
The setting and the first impression
The White Dunce Cap is a mushroom you meet by accident, usually before breakfast. You step onto a lawn that was watered overnight or caught a warm shower, and scattered across the grass are dozens of slender white spikes, each carrying a small pale conical cap. They stand 4 to 9 cm tall on stems barely thicker than a pin. By late morning many have keeled over, and by mid-afternoon the flush may have vanished entirely, leaving only a few limp brown scraps.
That extreme fragility is itself the first identification character. Grip the stem too hard and it shatters; lift the cap with a fingernail and it tears. Learn to slide a knife blade or a strip of card underneath and lift the whole thing off the ground with the base intact, then transport it in a rigid box rather than a bag. A crushed specimen is often unidentifiable.
Reading the cap
The cap is small, 1 to 2.5 cm across and about as tall as it is wide. Young caps are narrowly conical, like a witch hat or a thimble; with age they expand only slightly to a blunt cone or a low bell, and the margin may lift and flute. The colour is chalky white to cream, very often with a warmer ochre, honey or pale tan tone concentrated over the very apex.
The surface is dry and finely wrinkled, and when the cap is fresh and moist you can usually see fine radial lines running in from the margin where the gills show through the thin flesh. The whole structure is papery. There are no veil remnants on the cap, no scales, no viscidity, and nothing hangs from the margin.
Reading the gills
Turn the cap over with great care. The gills are narrow, crowded and either narrowly attached or almost free from the stem apex. Their colour is the clock you read the mushroom by. In a newly emerged specimen at dawn they are pale cream, almost white. Within hours they warm to buff, then to cinnamon, and in fully mature caps they are a distinct rust-brown. Under a hand lens the gill edges look whitish and minutely fringed against the darker faces, a subtle but consistent feature.
If you have a flush of different ages in front of you, line up three or four caps in order and use the oldest to read the gill colour and the youngest to read the cap shape. That is far more informative than studying one specimen.
Stipe and base
The stem is the giveaway in profile: 4 to 9 cm long but only 1 to 2 mm thick, straight, hollow, white to very pale cream, and brittle enough to snap under its own weight when the mushroom is picked. Look at it under a lens with the light raking across: the surface is finely pruinose, dusted as though with sugar or frost, and often faintly striate lengthwise.
The base is slightly swollen into a small rounded bulblet, usually with a few white mycelial threads binding grass roots and soil. There is no ring, no ring zone and no cobwebby veil, at any age. A membranous ring on a small brown-spored lawn mushroom takes you to a completely different group.
Flesh and colour change
There is barely any flesh to examine. What there is, is white, watery, less than a millimetre thick in the cap and confined to a thin tube in the stem. Cut it lengthwise and nothing happens: no bleeding, no latex, no reddening, no blueing, no blackening. The absence of colour change is worth recording because the collapsing lawn mushrooms that most resemble it, the inkcaps and their relatives, autodigest into inky or grey mush rather than simply wilting.
Taking and reading the spore print
The spore print is the single most decisive test on this species, and the good news is that it is fast. Mature caps release spores heavily, so a print often develops in one to three hours rather than overnight, which matters because the cap may not survive the night.
Cut the cap free, lay it gills down on white paper, cover it with a small glass or cup, and leave it somewhere cool and still. The deposit is rusty brown to cinnamon-brown, sometimes with a faint pinkish-tawny cast. If the cap collapses before it prints, you can often read the colour anyway: look for a fine rusty dusting on the upper stem, on the surrounding grass blades, or on the caps of specimens standing just below others in the flush.
Substrate and season
This is a grassland decomposer of rich, moist, regularly disturbed turf. Mown lawns, irrigated verges, sports grounds, garden edges, compost-enriched beds and wood-chip mulch all suit it. It responds within a day or two to watering or warm rain, which is why it appears in irrigated lawns even in dry weather.
The season runs from late spring through to autumn wherever the ground is kept damp. Fruiting is nocturnal to early-morning, gregarious but not clustered, with individuals scattered singly a few centimetres apart rather than fused at the base.
Separating it from its closest look-alikes
Yellow fieldcap (Bolbitius titubans). Same lawns, same fragility, same rusty spore print, but the young cap is bright egg-yellow and distinctly slimy, and it expands into a flat, deeply furrowed disc rather than staying conical.
Ringed relatives (Pholiotina and allied brown-spored lawn species). These share the rusty print but carry a distinct membranous ring on the stem and usually have a browner, more tan cap. Check the stem under a lens: the White Dunce Cap has a pruinose surface and nothing else.
Pleated inkcaps and Parasola species. Their caps are grey to grey-brown, radially pleated like a fan, and their spore deposit is black. They either dissolve into ink or shrivel to a thread rather than simply flopping over.
Mottlegills (Panaeolus). Tougher and greyer, with gills that go blotchy and mottled black rather than evenly rusty, and a black spore print.
Bonnets (Mycena) and other small white lawn agarics. These keep white gills and drop a white print. The rusty print is an immediate separation.
Fairy ring champignon (Marasmius oreades). Superficially a small buff lawn mushroom, but it is tough and pliant rather than brittle, with a wiry stem you can bend double, broad well-spaced gills and a white spore print.
