White King Bolete Identification Guide
How to work through Boletus barrowsii in the field: the pale buff cap, the white netted stipe, pores that age from white to olive-yellow, and flesh that refuses to change colour. Includes its southwestern pine and oak habitat and the boletes it is confused with.
The setting and the first impression
The White King Bolete is a mushroom of the mountain and foothill West of North America, and the setting does a great deal of the identification work. The classic encounter is in an open ponderosa pine forest in the southern Rockies or the Southwest, on gravelly soil among pine needles, in the days following a heavy monsoon storm in late summer. It also fruits under other pines and under oaks in the Southwest, and in coastal California it associates with live oak.
What catches your eye is a pale dome in the duff. Where its brown-capped relatives blend into pine litter, this one reads as a bar of ivory or old-parchment white sitting on a thick pale stem. Big specimens are genuinely heavy and can be 20 cm or more across, with a stem as thick as a wrist. Even a young button is dense and firm to lift, more like a potato than a mushroom.
Reading the cap
The cap runs from 8 to 25 cm and occasionally more. Young caps are hemispherical with the margin curved firmly downward and slightly overhanging the pore surface; with age they become broadly convex and finally flat or shallowly uneven.
Colour is white, ivory, chalky cream or pale buff, often warming to a light tan, pale grey-brown or faintly pinkish-buff over the disc in older or sun-exposed specimens. The surface is dry and matt, finely felted or suede-like to the fingertip, and in dry monsoon-gap weather it frequently cracks into a shallow mosaic that shows paler flesh in the fissures. It is not viscid even when wet, and there are no veil remnants on the margin.
Reading the pore surface
Turn it over. Boletes carry their spores in a layer of vertical tubes, and the surface you see is the open ends of those tubes.
In a young White King Bolete the pore surface is white and looks stuffed, as though packed with cotton wool, with the pore mouths barely open. As the fruitbody matures the surface passes through cream to yellow and finally to a dull olive-yellow or olive-brown. Pores are small and round, three or more to the millimetre in young material. The tube layer is 1 to 2 cm deep in a mature cap, and is depressed around the top of the stem so that it dips away from the point of attachment.
Press the pore surface firmly with a thumb and wait a full minute. There is no blue reaction. At most an old specimen shows a slow dull brownish smudge where it was handled. Any prompt blue or blue-green flush takes you out of this species immediately.
Reading the stipe
The stem is one of the two best characters. It is stout: 8 to 16 cm long and 3 to 6 cm thick, club-shaped to distinctly bulbous when young, becoming more nearly equal or slightly tapered upward as the cap expands. It is solid, dense and white to pale buff, sometimes with faint tan tones low down.
Now look at the upper stem under good light, ideally with a lens. It carries a fine raised network, a reticulum, of white ridges over a white ground. On some specimens the net covers only the top third; on others it extends most of the way to the base. Because it is white on white it is easily missed, so tilt the stem until raking light catches the ridges. The mesh is fine and even, not coarse, and there are no dark dots, scabers or granules anywhere.
Base, flesh and colour change
Dig the whole base and brush off the grit. It is rounded to slightly pointed, with white mycelial cords binding soil and pine needles. There is no cup, sac, rim or bulb margin of any kind.
Slice the fruitbody from cap centre through the base in a single cut. The flesh is thick, firm, and white. Watch the cut face for two or three minutes. In the White King Bolete it stays white, or at most develops a faint pinkish or pale tan tone deep in the stem base. This unchanging flesh, combined with white pores that never blue, is the core of the identification.
While the section is open, check the tube layer in profile: the tubes should separate cleanly from the cap flesh, which is normal for this group.
Taking and reading the spore print
Spore prints from big boletes take a little planning. Cut a wedge of cap 3 to 4 cm across including a full depth of tubes, and stand it tube-side down on white paper. Prop it so the tubes sit flush against the paper, cover it with a bowl to keep it humid, and leave it for six to twelve hours. A whole cap works too but is heavy and tends to sweat, so a wedge is easier.
The deposit is olive-brown to yellowish-brown. That colour is normal for the whole king bolete group and does not separate species within it, but it does confirm the genus and it decisively excludes the pale-spored gilled mushrooms that a stemless view of a white cap in duff might suggest.
Substrate and season
This is an ectomycorrhizal fungus. It forms sheathing partnerships with the fine roots of conifers and oaks and cannot be found away from them. The strongest association is with ponderosa pine, and it also occurs with other western pines, with Gambel and other oaks in the Southwest, and with coast live oak in California.
The main season in the interior Southwest is the summer monsoon, roughly July into September, with fruiting following heavy rain by about a week. In coastal California the pattern shifts to the cool wet part of the year. It fruits scattered or in small groups, often reappearing along the same drip lines and duff banks each season.
Separating it from its closest look-alikes
King bolete (Boletus edulis) and the Rocky Mountain king bolete (Boletus rubriceps). The structure is essentially the same: white reticulum, white then olive-yellow pores, unchanging white flesh, olive-brown print. The separation is cap colour. Those species have caps in warm brown, chestnut, tan or brick to reddish tones, while the White King Bolete is white to pale buff or at most light tan. Weathered pale specimens of the brown species can approach it, so also check for the darker margin and the more strongly two-toned cap they usually retain.
Bitter boletes (Tylopilus). Similar in stature and also non-blueing, but the pore surface flushes distinctly pink or pinkish-brown with age rather than yellow to olive, the reticulum is usually coarser and darker on a browner stem, and the spore print is pinkish-brown rather than olive-brown.
Scaber stalks (Leccinum). The stem ornamentation is different in kind: rough dark or brownish tufts and points, not a raised net. The flesh usually discolours grey, vinaceous or blackish on cutting.
Blue-staining boletes. Many pale-capped western boletes flush blue in the flesh or pores within seconds. A firm thumbprint on the pores and a clean section, both watched for a full minute, sort these out at once.
White Amanita species. Only a problem at button stage or from above. Turn the fruitbody over: gills instead of tubes, a ring on the stem and a sac or rimmed bulb at the base end the comparison instantly.
