Wolf Lichen Identification Guide

How to recognise Letharia vulpina, the shocking chartreuse-yellow shrubby lichen of dry western conifer forests, from its branching habit and granular isidia through to its rare apothecia and its brown-eyed sibling.

First Impression and Setting

There is no colour like it in a temperate forest. Letharia vulpina is a hot, acid, sulphur-chartreuse yellow-green that reads as a fluorescent stain on grey wood from ten metres away. You find it in dry, open, sun-struck montane conifer forest in western North America — ponderosa pine, western larch, Douglas fir, lodgepole pine, incense cedar — and disjunctly in parts of Europe, particularly the Alps, the Scandinavian mountains and inland Iberia. It grows in dense, tufted cushions, most characteristically on hard, weathered, barkless dead wood: standing snags, old branch stubs, split-rail fences, corral posts, and the dead lower limbs of living pines. Colonies range from a coin-sized rosette to sheets covering an entire trunk face.

Growth Form: Shrubby, Not Leafy

Before the details, settle the growth form, because that decision eliminates most of the alternatives. Letharia is fruticose: a three-dimensional, self-supporting shrublet that stands out from the substrate and looks the same from every side. Take a tuft between finger and thumb and roll it — there is no upper surface and no lower surface, no pale underside, no rhizines. A typical cushion is 2 to 7 cm tall and the same across, attached at a narrow holdfast, with dozens of branches radiating outward and upward in a tangled mass. Foliose lichens, by contrast, are leafy and flattened, with a distinct top and bottom, and crustose ones lie glued to the wood like paint.

Reading the Branches Under a Lens

The branching is irregular and uneven — not the neat, repeatedly equal forking of a hair lichen. Branches divide at odd angles, some staying thick and blunt while their neighbours run out into fine tips, and the whole tuft looks slightly chaotic. Under a lens the branch surface is far from smooth: it is wrinkled, ridged, pitted with shallow depressions, and often flattened or angular in section rather than cleanly round. Branch tips tend to be blunt and knobbly instead of tapering to points. The texture is stiff and slightly brittle when dry and becomes pliable after rain.

Isidia, Soredia and the Granular Crust

The defining surface feature of Letharia vulpina is that it looks encrusted. Dense granular to coarsely warty isidia and soredia crowd the ridges and cluster thickly toward the branch tips, giving the whole thallus a mealy, sugared appearance under magnification. Rub a branch gently on a dark surface and a fine yellow-green powder comes away. This heavy vegetative propagation is the species' main means of spreading, and it is also the single best character for separating it from its close relative, which is comparatively smooth.

Apothecia and the Absence of a Spore Print

Sexual fruiting bodies are uncommon in this species and you should not expect them. When present, they are apothecia: cup- to saucer-shaped discs 2 to 12 mm across, seated on the sides or tips of branches, with a shining chestnut to dark brown face surrounded by a thick, warty, bright yellow rim of thallus tissue. Spore prints play no role in lichen identification — the spores are released microscopically from these discs and there is no gill or pore surface to lay face-down. Instead, record apothecia as a character in their own right, noting how many there are relative to the size of the tuft, because abundance is diagnostic.

Colour, Pigment and Spot Tests

The intense yellow-green sits in the outer skin of the thallus and is remarkably stable: old herbarium material a century old keeps it. It does not fade appreciably in sun, and it does not change when the lichen is wetted, although a soaked thallus looks deeper and greener. Standard lichen spot tests are rarely necessary here because the colour and habit are so distinctive, but the yellow cortex shows no colour change with potassium hydroxide, which distinguishes it from several unrelated yellow crusts.

Substrate, Exposure and Season

Letharia is a lichen of dry, bright, well-ventilated forest, roughly from 400 to 3000 m in the western mountains. It wants strong light and periodic wetting rather than constant humidity, which is why it flourishes on exposed snags and on the sunlit dead branch zone of open-grown pines while being scarce in dense, closed, wet coastal stands. It is common on old wooden structures in ranch and forest country. Being a perennial organism it is present year-round; growth is slow and cushions persist for decades, so there is no season to time your search to. After snowmelt and spring rain the colonies are plump and vivid; in high summer they are brittle and slightly duller.

Separating the Look-alikes on Structure Alone

Letharia columbiana, the brown-eyed sibling, is the only real confusion. It shares the colour and the shrubby habit but produces apothecia abundantly — large brown discs are often the dominant feature of the tuft — while its branches are comparatively smooth, with few or no granular isidia. In short: powdery and rarely fruiting equals vulpina; smooth and heavily fruiting equals columbiana.

Vulpicida canadensis is yellow-green but foliose, forming flattened, wavy, leaf-like lobes with a distinct paler underside. Roll it between your fingers and the two-sided structure is obvious.

Chrysothrix candelaris and similar yellow powder lichens form a flat, granular film on bark with no three-dimensional branches at all — a stain rather than a shrub.

Evernia mesomorpha is pale yellow-green and shrubby but its branches are strap-shaped and softly pliable, with a much duller, paler tone and no chartreuse intensity.

Usnea species can look yellowish-green, but their branches are round in section and contain a white elastic central cord revealed by pulling a strand apart. Letharia has no such cord.

Very slowly. Growth is measured in a few millimetres per year, so a large cushion may represent several decades of accumulation. Because it is perennial and its pigment is stable, colonies persist year-round through snow and summer drought, which is why the species can be found and identified in any month.
