Yellow Coral Identification Guide
A field routine for Ramaria flava: reading the massive white base, the sulphur-yellow forking branches, the slow wine-brown bruising and the ochre spore print that separates it from other corals.
Standing Over the Find
Mature broadleaf woodland, a slope under beech, deep leaf litter, late summer or early autumn. What stops you is bulk. A dense, pale yellow mass the size of a fist or a cabbage sits on the litter, made up of dozens of upright branches crowded together and rising from a single thick base. The impression is of a piece of reef stranded on the woodland floor. Nothing about it suggests a cap and a stem, and unlike the small delicate corals it is heavy enough to be worth two hands. Fruit bodies typically stand eight to twenty centimetres tall and can be as broad as they are high.
Reading the Base
With club and coral fungi, work from the bottom up. Clear the litter away with your fingers and expose the base fully, because its size, colour and firmness carry a great deal of information.
In this species the base is a single massive fleshy trunk, sometimes three to five centimetres thick, white to very pale cream and noticeably paler than the branches above it. It is firm and solid rather than hollow, it is buried a short way in the litter, and it does not root into a piece of wood. That last point is worth checking properly with a knife: excavate under the base and confirm you are in soil and humus, not in a rotten stump or buried log.
The base is also where the colour change shows first. Handle it, scratch it, or leave the specimen in a basket for an hour and the white surface stains slowly to wine-brown, purplish brown or dull reddish brown. That gradual bruising is a genuine identification character and worth deliberately testing with a fingernail while you are still standing over the fungus.
Reading the Branches
From the trunk the fungus divides, and then divides again, mostly into pairs, giving a repeatedly forked structure. Count the levels of branching: several successive forks is normal, so that a single base supports a crowded canopy of short upright branch ends.
Colour on the branches is sulphur to lemon yellow, often a little brighter and clearer than the mid-branches, and it dulls to ochre with age. Look at the axils where two branches diverge: they are usually rounded rather than sharply V-shaped in this group. Finish at the tips. They are small, blunt to slightly pointed, and typically split into two or three tiny prongs, concolorous with the branches or a shade paler and more greenish yellow. Tip colour is one of the standard ways of separating yellow corals, so record it carefully before the specimen ages.
Flesh, Section and Colour Change
Slice the whole fruit body from top to bottom with a sharp blade. The interior is white and rather marbled or watery-looking in the base, firmer and more brittle in the branches, which snap cleanly rather than bending. Watch the cut face for several minutes: the wine-brown reaction appears slowly and unevenly, strongest in the base and lower branches, faint or absent in fresh upper branches. In older material the whole lower half may already be discoloured before you touch it. There is no latex and no blueing.
Taking a Spore Print
Corals print easily if you accept a smear rather than a neat silhouette. Cut two or three mature branches, lay them flat on a strip of glass over dark card or on white paper, cover with a bowl, and leave overnight. The deposit builds along the length of each branch.
In this genus the print is pale ochre to yellowish brown, and that colour alone separates the fleshy Ramaria corals from the white-printing Clavulina and Clavaria groups. Judge it against both white and dark backgrounds because pale ochre on white can look like nothing at all. Microscopically the spores are elongate-ellipsoid and clearly roughened with warts and low ridges, again unlike the smooth spores of the white corals.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
This is a soil-dwelling, root-associated fungus. It forms mycorrhizal partnerships with broadleaf trees, especially beech and to a lesser extent oak and other hardwoods, and it favours mature woodland on richer, often calcareous soils. It fruits from the ground among litter, frequently on slopes and banks, and it returns to the same spots across years. You may find single large fruit bodies, scattered groups, or arcs and partial rings tracing the spread of the underground network.
The season is mid to late summer through autumn, generally starting earlier than most woodland fungi and peaking after warm rain. Because the fruit bodies are fleshy and long-lived, a colony can be tracked over a fortnight as the branches dull from lemon to ochre and the base darkens.
Separating the Look-alikes
Ramaria formosa has a similar bulk and white base but its branches are salmon to pinkish, with contrasting bright yellow tips, so the colour zonation runs pink below and yellow above rather than yellow throughout.
Ramaria aurea is deeper golden orange overall, and its base bruises far less readily, so the wine-brown reaction test is the practical separator. Ramaria sanguinea shares yellow branches but its base turns a distinct blood red almost immediately when scratched, faster and redder than the slow wine-brown here.
Ramaria stricta is the easiest to exclude on habit alone: it is smaller, buff to ochre rather than sulphur yellow, its branches are strikingly straight, parallel and upright like a bundle of sticks, and it grows on wood, from buried branches, stumps and chip, bruising brownish. Whenever a coral appears to grow from wood, think of this species first.
Among the smaller corals, Clavulina coralloides is white, low and finely crested at the tips, with a white spore print. Ramariopsis crocea is small, slender and orange but lacks any substantial base.
Finally, yellow stagshorn, Calocera viscosa, can look superficially similar at a distance. Its branches are gelatinous-elastic and rubbery, they resist snapping and instead bend and stretch, they are usually smoother and antler-like with forked pointed tips, and they root into conifer wood. One squeeze tells you which group you are in.
