Yellowfoot Dapperling Identification Guide

How to work through Lepiota magnispora in woodland litter, from its woolly brown-scaled cap and shaggy yellow-sheathed stem to the large spindle-shaped spores behind its name.

First Impressions in the Leaf Litter

The scene is woodland floor: leaf litter under beech, oak or hazel, or needle duff under conifers, sometimes a shady hedge bank or a shrubbery in a park. The fruit body is slender and neat, standing a few centimetres above the litter on a thin stalk. Two features register immediately. The cap looks as though it has been wrapped in coarse brown wool that has split apart over a paler background, leaving a smooth darker button at the very centre. And the stalk, below a vague collar, is sheathed in shaggy cotton wool tinged yellow, which is where the common name comes from.

Small pale mushrooms with free gills and a ring are a group that rewards patience. The routine below covers the characters that distinguish this one, taken in the order they are easiest to observe.

Reading the Cap

Caps measure roughly 3 to 6 cm across. They start ovoid or bluntly conical and expand to convex or nearly flat, usually keeping a low, broad central umbo.

The surface architecture matters more than any single colour. The centre, over the umbo, stays smooth, unbroken and distinctly darker: a warm yellow-brown, tawny or reddish-brown disc. Away from that disc the cuticle breaks up as the cap expands, tearing into coarse, woolly-fibrillose, recurved scales in ochre-brown and tawny tones. Between the scales the underlying flesh shows through as cream or whitish, so the finished effect is a dark button surrounded by concentric untidy brown wool on a pale field.

Check the margin. It is commonly fringed with hanging remnants of the veil, sometimes as a full cottony fringe on young caps, and it may be faintly grooved in age.

Gills and the Underside

Turn the cap over. The gills are free, standing clear of the stipe with a small gap, crowded, soft, and white to pale cream throughout life; some collections take on a faint yellowish or pinkish-cream cast with age. Under a lens the gill edge appears finely fringed. Short intermediate gills are frequent.

The gills never develop the rust, brown, pink or black tones that would point elsewhere, and they never turn green.

Stipe, Veil and Base

The stipe is 4 to 9 cm long, 4 to 8 mm thick, cylindrical, straight or slightly curved, and often a touch swollen at the base.

Above the veil zone it is smooth, whitish and often faintly silky. From the veil zone downward it is densely covered by a shaggy, cottony to woolly-floccose coating in cream to distinctly yellow or ochre-yellow tones, deepening toward the base. The yellow may be muted in very young or very old specimens, so examine several fruit bodies. Handling rubs the wool away, which is one reason to inspect the stipe before pulling the mushroom up.

There is no firm, membranous, movable ring. Instead the veil leaves an ill-defined, floccose girdle or ring zone that quickly becomes ragged and may vanish, so a mature stipe simply looks shaggy below and bare above.

At the base, look carefully. There is no cup, no sac and no free-margined volva of any kind, only mycelial threads binding leaf fragments. That absence separates the dapperlings from superficially similar white-gilled mushrooms with a volva.

Flesh, Section and Odour

Slice the fruit body lengthwise. The flesh is thin, soft and white, and the stipe interior is stuffed with loose fibres at first, hollowing with age. Colour change is minimal: at most a slight yellowing in the base and a faint browning where insects have tunnelled. The odour is worth noting, often described as sharp and rubbery or slightly like burnt hair, and it is stronger when the flesh is crushed between the fingers.

Spore Print and the Reason for the Name

Lay a mature cap gill-side down on dark card, cover it, and give it three or more hours. The print is white to very pale cream, the standard result for the genus.

If a microscope is available, the spores are the clincher and the source of the epithet. They are large, roughly 15 to 24 micrometres long by 4 to 6 micrometres wide, and distinctly fusiform, that is, spindle-shaped and tapering at both ends, with a slightly curved profile in side view. They react dextrinoid in Melzer reagent, turning red-brown. Once seen, that long spindle is unmistakable and settles collections that look ambiguous in the field.

Substrate, Season and Ecology

This is a litter saprotroph. It lives on fallen leaves, needles, twiggy debris and humus, decomposing that material rather than partnering with tree roots, so it will fruit under a wide range of trees and also in gardens, hedgerows, parkland and stabilised dune scrub. It favours rich, humus-heavy ground in shade.

The season runs from late summer through autumn, later in mild areas. Fruit bodies appear singly, in small scattered groups or in loose troops where litter has accumulated, and they often reappear in the same litter pocket in subsequent years.

Separating the Nearest Relatives

Lepiota clypeolaria is the closest and hardest comparison. It shares the shaggy stipe, free white gills and fusiform spores, but its cap tends to be paler cream to yellowish-buff with a browner disc, and its stipe wool is whitish to pale cream rather than the warmer yellow to ochre seen here. Cap scale colour and stipe wool colour, judged together on fresh material, are the practical field separators.

Lepiota cristata is smaller and neater, with a white cap decorated with small concentric reddish-brown scales, a distinct if narrow ring, a smooth white stipe without shaggy wool, and short bullet or spur-shaped spores.

Lepiota felina has darker, almost blackish-brown scales, occurs mainly in conifer litter, and has a better-defined ring.

Species of Cystolepiota and Melanophyllum are smaller and mealy or granular rather than woolly-scaly, and Melanophyllum has coloured gills.

The larger parasol mushrooms in Macrolepiota and Chlorophyllum are separated by size alone, plus a thick, double-edged, freely movable ring and a bulbous base.

What to Record

Photograph the intact stipe before collecting, since the wool is easily rubbed off, and note its colour precisely. Record the litter type, the nearest trees, the cap disc colour, and the presence or absence of a marginal fringe. If you keep a specimen, dry it gently; spore shape survives drying and can be checked later.
