Yellowfoot Identification Guide

A field companion to Craterellus tubaeformis, the small brown funnel of mossy conifer woods, recognised by blunt decurrent veins, a perforated cap centre and a hollow yellow stem.

Where the Search Starts

The habitat does half the work. Head for old conifer forest on acid ground, the kind with deep moss carpets, well-rotted fallen logs going soft underfoot, banks of needle litter and boggy hollows edged with sphagnum. Spruce and pine plantations of a certain age are excellent. Then look down and let your eye adjust, because this is a small, dull-toned mushroom that hides in exactly the colours of its background: greyish brown against brown needles.

Once you spot one, you almost always find dozens. Fruit bodies come up in dense troops spread over several square metres, frequently springing directly from moss cushions or from crumbling buried wood. The individual silhouette is a slim, wavy-edged funnel on a thin stalk, and a troop of them read as a scatter of tiny trumpets tilted at different angles.

The Silhouette and the Cap Surface

Caps run 2 to 6 cm across, occasionally larger in sheltered spots. They begin convex with an inrolled edge and quickly become depressed, then funnel-shaped, and finally the centre thins and perforates so that a hole opens through into the hollow stem. Poking a grass stem down the funnel and having it emerge at the base is a quick, satisfying confirmation.

The margin is thin, wavy, lobed and often split, rarely forming a neat circle. The surface is finely fibrillose to slightly scurfy under a lens rather than smooth or scaly. Colour varies enormously with weather because the flesh is hygrophanous: soaked specimens are dark greyish brown or umber, while dry ones fade to tan, yellow-brown or dull ochre. That variability trips people up, so treat colour as a soft character and structure as the hard one.

The Underside Is Not Gills

Turn a fruit body over and look closely, ideally with a lens. What you see are blunt, thick, rounded ridges that run down onto the stem, fork repeatedly, and are joined to one another by low cross-veins so the whole surface looks netted rather than pleated. They are shallow, no more than a millimetre or two deep, and they are continuous with the cap flesh, so you cannot peel or scrape one off cleanly the way you can flick a true gill away with a fingernail.

The colour of these veins is variable and a good field note: pale grey, ash-grey with a lilac cast, or dull ochre-buff, sometimes shifting from grey when young to yellowish in age. A mushroom with thin, blade-like, knife-edged gills that come away cleanly is not this species, whatever the cap looks like.

The Hollow Yellow Stem

The stem gives the mushroom its common name. It measures 3 to 8 cm long and 4 to 10 mm thick, tapers downward, and is frequently flattened, grooved or slightly twisted rather than perfectly round. Colour ranges from chrome yellow through egg-yellow to warm ochre, usually brightest in the middle section and duller where litter has stained it.

Squeeze it. The stem is hollow and compresses easily, springing back rather than snapping. Slice it lengthwise and the cavity runs the full length and opens up into the funnel of the cap, confirming the perforation seen from above. The base is often furnished with white mycelial threads binding moss, needles and rotten wood fragments.

Flesh, Handling and Odour

The flesh is thin, whitish to pale yellowish, and notably elastic. It does not crumble; a fruit body can be bent almost double and will spring back. There is no latex and no colour change on cutting or bruising beyond a slight darkening where handled repeatedly. The odour is faint and mildly fruity or earthy. Fruit bodies persist well, tolerate frost and can be found looking fresh weeks after the first cold snaps.

Spore Print Practicalities

A spore print is easy to take but the deposit is pale, so use dark paper or a piece of glass over a black background. Lay several mature caps vein-side down, since one small cap yields a thin print, and cover with a bowl for a few hours or overnight. The deposit is white to pale cream, sometimes with a very faint yellowish cast. Under the microscope the spores are smooth and broadly ellipsoid.

Substrate and Season

This is a mycorrhizal partner of conifers, but its fruit bodies commonly appear on and among very decayed wood, moss and deep needle duff, which sometimes leads people to record it as a wood-rotting species. Note both the immediate substrate and the surrounding trees when recording it. The season is long, running from late summer through autumn and often deep into early winter, and it is one of the last troops of mushrooms standing in northern forests.

Telling It From Its Relatives

Craterellus lutescens is the closest match on habitat and shape. Its underside is nearly smooth or only shallowly wrinkled rather than clearly ridged and cross-veined, and its colouring is warmer, with an orange-yellow hymenium and a bright orange-yellow stem.

Craterellus cornucopioides is grey-black to sooty brown throughout, with a smooth to faintly wrinkled underside and a stem that is never yellow.

Cantharellus cibarius is thicker, fleshier, uniformly egg-yellow to apricot, and has a solid stem with no perforation into the cap.

Pseudocraterellus undulatus is greyer and smaller with a grey stem and much less pronounced hollowing.

Among gilled mushrooms, Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca is the classic trap: orange, forking gills, but they are genuinely thin and blade-like, the cap is dry and velvety, and the stem is solid. Gomphidius and Chroogomphus have decurrent true gills but slimy or fibrous caps and dark spore deposits.

Field Notes Worth Recording

Write down whether the cap centre is fully perforated, the colour of the veins as seen fresh, the stem colour before soil staining, the substrate under the base, and the nearest conifer species. Photograph one fruit body sliced lengthwise so the hollow interior and the cap perforation are both visible in a single frame.

Common questions

Is the cap really hollow right through to the stem base?
In mature fruit bodies, yes. The centre of the funnel thins and opens, and the cavity continues down the full length of the stem. Sliding a grass stem in at the top and seeing it appear at the bottom is a quick field confirmation.
Are the structures on the underside gills?
No. They are blunt, rounded, forking ridges connected by cross-veins and formed from the cap flesh itself, so they cannot be cleanly detached. True gills are thin, blade-like and separate easily from the cap tissue.
Why does the cap colour vary so much between collections?
The flesh is hygrophanous, meaning it changes tone with its water content. Wet fruit bodies look dark umber or greyish brown, while the same troop after a dry spell fades to tan or dull ochre. Structure is far more reliable than colour here.
What habitat and season should I search?
Old, mossy, acid conifer woodland with plenty of rotting wood and deep needle litter, often near boggy hollows. Fruiting runs from late summer through autumn and frequently continues into early winter, in large scattered troops.
