Zeller's Bolete Identification Guide

How to recognise Xerocomellus zelleri in Pacific coast conifer forest by its sooty, finely wrinkled cap with a pale marginal rim, yellow blueing pores and red-streaked stalk. Covers the cut section, the olive-brown spore print and the look-alike boletes.

The Setting You Will Be Standing In

Zeller's Bolete is a creature of the Pacific coast conifer belt. Picture second-growth Douglas-fir with western hemlock coming up beneath it, a floor of needle duff and shaggy moss, and the cut bank of an old forestry road where the soil is thin and the moss is thick. That road bank, and the mossy shoulder of a trail, are where this species turns up most reliably. It also fruits happily around very decayed conifer logs and on bark mulch and wood-chip paths in gardens planted with conifers, so a bolete apparently growing on wood should not push you away from this name.

The range runs from southern Alaska through coastal British Columbia, Washington and Oregon into the northern Californian coast ranges, and the season stretches from September into January where winters stay mild. Fruit bodies are usually solitary or scattered, sometimes a handful along a few metres of bank.

First Impression

The thing looks scorched. Against pale moss you see a very dark, matte, almost sooty cap with a curiously crumpled surface, and when you tilt it you find a stalk that is streaked and flushed dark red over yellow. That contrast, black above and red below, is the whole gestalt of the species, and it is visible from standing height once you have seen it twice.

Reading the Cap

The cap is 4 to 12 cm across, hemispherical at first, then convex, finally broadly convex to nearly flat, and often slightly uneven or lumpy in profile rather than perfectly regular.

Colour is the headline character. Expect blackish brown, sooty olive-black or very dark chocolate, sometimes with vinaceous or purplish undertones, and darkest over the centre. Look carefully at the extreme edge: most mature caps show a narrow contrasting marginal band, a rim of yellow-ochre, pale pinkish or dull red where the dark cuticle thins out over the margin. That pale rim on a very dark cap is one of the most reliable single characters in the group.

The surface is dry, matte to minutely velvety when young, and characteristically finely wrinkled or rugulose, like crumpled leather. In dry spells and in age it develops shallow cracks that reveal pale yellow to pinkish tissue beneath, but the cracking stays fine and irregular rather than opening into the coarse mosaic seen in relatives. The cuticle does not peel away cleanly. The margin often overhangs the tubes slightly in young specimens, with a fine sterile edge.

Reading the Pores

Turn the fruit body over. The tube layer is 5 to 15 mm deep, depressed around the stipe apex or narrowly adnate, and it separates cleanly from the cap flesh as a sheet if you slide a knife blade between the two, which is a normal bolete trait worth confirming.

Pore mouths are angular and rather wide, roughly one to two per millimetre, bright yellow when young, dulling through olive-yellow to brownish-olive with age. Press a fingertip firmly across the pore surface and hold: a blue to blue-green stain appears within seconds, often patchy, and typically fades toward a dingy brown after a minute or two. In old, waterlogged or very cold material the reaction weakens, so always test the youngest fruit body in the collection before concluding anything about staining.

Reading the Stipe

The stipe is 4 to 10 cm long and 8 to 20 mm thick, more or less equal or a little swollen through the middle and tapering below, solid and firm throughout, never hollow.

Run a hand lens over the apex. There is no net, no reticulation, no raised ridges. Instead the ground colour is yellow, overlaid with fine red to brownish-red fibrils, streaks and granular dots that in most collections cover so much of the surface that the stalk reads as dark red overall, with yellow surviving only at the very apex and around the extreme base. The base itself is pale yellow to whitish, with white or yellowish basal mycelium binding needles and moss into a small pad.

The Cut Section: Flesh and Colour Change

Slice the entire mushroom lengthwise from cap centre to stipe base. The flesh is pale yellow, and there is usually a distinct reddish or pinkish zone immediately beneath the cap cuticle and in the outer layer of the stipe. That subcuticular red line is a good supporting character.

The blueing is slow and modest rather than dramatic. Expect a pale blue-green flush to spread through the tube layer and the cap flesh over a minute or two, sometimes strong, often faint, occasionally almost absent in cold weather. The stipe base tends toward dull reddish or brownish tones rather than blue. There is no latex, no gelatinous layer, and no strong odour.

Taking and Reading a Spore Print

The print is olive-brown to dull olive, dark enough that plain white paper is the right surface. Cut the stipe flush with the tubes, lay the cap pores-down, cover it with a bowl or a large tub to keep the air still and humid, and leave it four to eight hours. Mature caps drop heavily and quickly.

Under the microscope the spores are smooth-walled, subfusiform to elongate-ellipsoid, roughly 12 to 16 by 4 to 6 micrometres. The smooth surface rules out genera with ornamented or striate spores and confirms you are in the right neighbourhood.

Substrate, Partners and Season

This is an ectomycorrhizal species, partnering above all with Douglas-fir and also with western hemlock, Sitka spruce and shore pine. The apparent wood-inhabiting habit, on rotten logs and wood chips, reflects roots running through that decayed material rather than a change of lifestyle. Ground that suits it is mossy, acidic, well drained and often disturbed: road cuts, trail edges, old skid tracks. Fruiting follows the autumn rains and continues through the coastal winter.

Separating the Look-alikes on Morphology Alone

  • The Xerocomellus chrysenteron and diffractus group is the main confusion. Their caps are paler, olive-brown to tan or plain brown, and the cracking is coarse and mosaic-like across most of the cap with pink or red flesh showing in the fissures. They lack the sooty-black ground colour and lack the crisp pale marginal rim, and their stalks are streaked yellow-brown to reddish rather than solidly dark red.
  • Xerocomellus mendocinensis and atropurpureus run to brighter reds and purples in the cap, without the matte sooty finish, and their marginal band is absent or ill-defined.
  • Hortiboletus and Rubroboletus relatives give themselves away by red or orange pore mouths, a reticulate stipe, or bright chrome-yellow basal flesh with carrot-coloured dots at the very base of the stipe.
  • Suillus species have glutinous caps when wet, glandular dots on the stipe, often a veil or ring, and grow with pines and larch.
  • Chalciporus piperatus is much smaller, with a cinnamon-brown cap, rusty to reddish-brown decurrent pores, chrome-yellow flesh in the stipe base and no blueing.
  • Leccinum species carry rough dark scabers on a whitish stipe, with whitish to buff pores and no red streaking.

Hold the three-part signature in mind and the species resolves fast: a sooty, finely wrinkled cap with a pale rim, yellow pores that blue on pressure, and a yellow stipe overlaid with dark red streaks.

Common questions

What separates Zeller's Bolete from the common cracked-cap boletes?
Look at the cap colour and the way it cracks. Zeller's Bolete has a very dark sooty blackish to olive-black cap with a fine crumpled or wrinkled surface, and a narrow pale yellow to reddish rim right at the margin. The chrysenteron and diffractus group have paler olive-brown to tan caps that split into a coarse mosaic of cracks with pinkish flesh showing between the plates, and they have no crisp marginal band.
Which trees and ground should I search?
Coastal Pacific conifer forest, especially Douglas-fir with western hemlock and Sitka spruce. The most productive spots are mossy cut banks along old forest roads, trail shoulders, and ground littered with very rotten conifer wood. It also appears on bark mulch and wood-chip paths where conifers have been planted, which surprises people who expect a strictly soil-dwelling bolete.
Is it really growing on wood when I find it on a rotten log?
Not in the decomposer sense. It is an ectomycorrhizal partner of conifers, and the fruit bodies that appear on well-rotted logs, chips and mulch are produced by mycelium sheathing tree roots that have grown up into that soft, moisture-holding material. Treat wood as a favoured fruiting position rather than as a nutritional substrate.
How reliable is the blue staining as an identification character?
It is supporting evidence, not a decisive test. The blueing in this species is slow and often weak, showing as a pale blue-green flush in the pores and cap flesh over a minute or two, and it can be nearly absent in cold weather or in old, waterlogged specimens. Always test the freshest fruit body available and weight the cap colour, the pale rim and the red-streaked stipe more heavily.
