Death Cap Identification Guide
A structure-by-structure field guide to Amanita phalloides, the greenish oak-associated Amanita with a skirt-like ring and a buried sack-like volva. Covers cap streaking, free white gills, digging out the base, the white amyloid print and its look-alikes.
The Setting and the First Look
The Death Cap is a mushroom of mature broadleaved woodland and of planted trees in parks, gardens, avenues and campuses. Oak is the classic partner, with beech, sweet chestnut, hornbeam and hazel also frequent, and in regions where the fungus has been carried along with nursery stock it appears under introduced oaks, chestnuts and hazelnuts far outside its native range. Look on the ground beneath the canopy, in leaf litter or in mown grass under isolated trees.
The first impression is of a clean, medium to large, pale greenish mushroom standing upright and looking somehow well made: a smooth domed cap with a silky sheen, a white skirt hanging from the upper stem, and a swollen base half buried in the soil. There is nothing ragged or scaly about it. Amanita phalloides is a species where the shape and the assembly of parts identify it long before any single colour does.
Reading the Cap
Caps are typically 5 to 15 cm across, hemispherical when young and expanding to broadly convex or nearly flat. The margin stays smooth and even, without the radial grooving seen in many other Amanita species, and this smooth non-striate rim is a character worth checking every time.
The colour is variable and often misdescribed. Most caps are some shade of olive-green, yellow-green, greenish-bronze or greenish-grey, usually darkest across the centre. Pale forms shade to cream or almost pure white, and weathered caps can look brownish or bleached. What is more constant than hue is the surface: fine, dark, innate radial fibrils lie beneath a smooth, faintly greasy skin, giving a silky streaked appearance like watered silk. The cap is usually free of any patches of veil tissue, though a rain-washed specimen occasionally keeps a single membranous flap.
The Gills
Turn a cap over. The gills are free, stopping short of the stem in a narrow clean gap, crowded, moderately broad and soft, and pure white, remaining white at maturity with at most the faintest cream tone in age. Short intermediate gills are numerous, and the gill faces have a slightly floccose look under a lens. Persistent white free gills beneath a green-tinged cap immediately exclude the brown-gilled and pink-gilled genera that share the same woodlands.
The Stipe, Ring and Base
The stipe is 7 to 15 cm tall and 1 to 2 cm thick, tapering slightly upwards, white or off-white, and often decorated with faint greyish or olive-tinted zigzag or chevron patterning, best seen in raking light.
Two structures matter more than anything else on this mushroom. First, a large, soft, pendulous membranous ring sits high on the stem, its upper surface finely grooved where the gills once pressed against it; it hangs like a skirt and persists into old age, though it can be torn off by rain or by careless handling. Second, and decisively, the stipe base swells into an ovoid bulb wrapped in a large, white, membranous, sack-like volva, which stands free of the stem as a loose bag with a lobed or split upper edge.
The volva is usually buried. You must lift the whole fruitbody out of the soil with a knife or your fingers, digging several centimetres down, or you will simply not see it. A specimen picked at ground level loses the most important structure it has.
Flesh, Colour Change and Odour
Split a fruitbody vertically through cap, stem and base. The flesh is white throughout and does not change colour on exposure, with perhaps a faint yellowish tinge directly under the cap skin. The stem is stuffed and then hollowing, the base solid.
Young fruitbodies have little smell. As they age the odour becomes noticeably sweetish, honeyed and eventually cloying and unpleasant, and old collections in a closed container announce themselves as soon as the lid comes off.
Taking a Spore Print
Cut the stem flush and place the cap gills-down on black card, covered, for four to eight hours. The print is white, sometimes with the faintest cream cast. Because the gills already look white, the print on a dark background is worth doing carefully; it is the character that eliminates the brown-spored and pink-spored genera in one step.
Under the microscope the spores are smooth, broadly ellipsoid to nearly globose, roughly 8 to 11 by 7 to 9 micrometres, and amyloid, staining blue-black in Melzer's reagent. That amyloid reaction distinguishes the section this species belongs to from ringed Amanita relatives whose spores stay unstained.
Substrate and Season
Amanita phalloides is mycorrhizal, forming sheathing root partnerships with its host trees, so it is always associated with living trees and never fruits from logs, stumps, woodchips or compost. Oaks of many species are the commonest partners, along with beech, chestnut, hornbeam, lime and hazel; in introduced populations it has moved onto planted oaks and other hosts.
Fruiting runs from mid or late summer through autumn, peaking after sustained rain, and in mild maritime climates it can continue into early winter. Fruitbodies appear singly, scattered, or in small arcs following the spread of the root system, but never in tufts joined at the base.
Separating the Close Look-alikes on Morphology Alone
Amanita citrina shares a pale greenish-yellow cap and a ring, but its bulb is rimmed and marginate, sitting in the soil like a turnip with a distinct upper edge, rather than being wrapped in a free sack-like volva. It also usually carries flat patches of buff veil tissue on the cap and has a strong raw-potato smell.
Amanita porphyria has a greyish-brown to purplish cap and, again, a marginate rimmed bulb rather than a free bag.
Grisette-type Amanita species have a saccate volva but no ring at all, and their cap margins are strongly grooved.
Volvopluteus and Volvariella have a volva and free gills but no ring, and their gills turn pink as the spores ripen, giving a pink print.
Agaricus species have a ring but no volva at all; their gills pass from pink to chocolate-brown and the print is dark brown.
Green Russula species such as R. virescens have attached gills, brittle chalky flesh that snaps like a stick of blackboard chalk, and no ring or volva whatsoever.
Tricholoma and Lepista species lack both a volva and a skirt-like grooved ring.
Egg-stage fruitbodies, still fully enclosed in the white universal veil, look like small puffballs. Cut one vertically: a puffball is uniformly white and undifferentiated inside, while an Amanita egg shows the outline of a miniature cap, gills and stem within the veil.
Field Checklist
