The Setting Does Half the Work
This is a grassland fungus, and the right field looks specific once you have seen a few. Think old, unimproved, closely grazed pasture on acid soil: sheep-cropped hill ground, coastal cliff-top turf, rough commons, the edges of upland tracks, and the tussocky corners of long-established fields. Moss between the grass stems and a thick thatch of dead grass at the base are good signs. Heavily fertilised silage leys and reseeded lawns produce little.
Psilocybe semilanceata is saprotrophic, living on decaying grass roots and litter in the turf, so it grows among the grass rather than out of dung, though it will happily colonise old, well-rotted, grass-grown pasture where livestock have been for years. The season is autumn: late August through November in most of its range, peaking after cool wet spells, and finishing with hard frost.
First Impressions
You are looking for something small and easy to miss. Caps are only 5 to 25 mm across and sit on threadlike stems that hold them just above the grass. The silhouette is the giveaway: a narrow cone or bell that comes to a distinct point, like a tiny witch's hat or a rolled umbrella. Scattered fruitbodies, sometimes many across a slope, but never in fused tufts.
Reading the Cap
Get down to eye level and study the profile. The cap is conical to sharply bell-shaped and, crucially, carries a small pointed papilla at the very apex, a distinct nipple that stands proud of the curve. Run a fingertip over it; you can feel the point. Very few grassland mushrooms of this size have a true papilla, and it is the first thing to check.
The margin is incurved or straight rather than flared, and in older caps it may turn up slightly and darken. The cap almost never expands flat.
Colour depends entirely on moisture, because the cap is strongly hygrophanous. Wet, it is a rich chestnut to olive-brown or dark ochre, and the margin is finely lined where the gills show through the flesh. As it dries, the colour fades from the top downwards to pale straw, buff or almost whitish, and the lines disappear. Two caps from the same patch, one shaded and one sun-dried, can look like different species. Judge colour only in known condition.
The Peelable Skin
This is the test that most people skip and it is worth doing. The cap carries a separable gelatinous pellicle. On a moist cap, catch the very edge of the skin with a fingernail or the tip of a knife and pull upwards; it lifts away as an elastic, transparent film, rather like removing cling film. Dry caps must be moistened for a few minutes first. Many small brown grassland mushrooms have no such separable layer at all, so a clean peel is strong evidence.
Gills and Their Progression
The gills are narrow, crowded and adnexed to almost free, attaching narrowly at the stipe apex rather than running down it. Their colour marches through a sequence with maturity: pale cream or grey-brown when young, then coffee-brown, then a dark purple-brown to almost black-purple as the spores ripen. The gill edges commonly stay paler, a fine whitish line visible with a lens against the darker faces.
A mottled or patchy gill face, where dark and pale areas alternate unevenly, points elsewhere; here the darkening is fairly even.
The Stipe and Base
The stipe is 40 to 100 mm long and only 1 to 3 mm thick, thread-like in proportion to the cap, and it is usually sinuous or wavy rather than straight. It is tough and flexible, so it bends and springs back instead of snapping, and it is hollow or stuffed with a fine pith.
Colour is whitish to pale buff or dingy cream, sometimes with a faint yellowish or olive tint in the upper part, and it is finely fibrillose. There is no ring, though very young fruitbodies may show a cobwebby veil trace that soon vanishes.
At the base, look for the colour change: the extreme bottom of the stipe often develops a blue-green or greenish tinge, sometimes as a small patch, sometimes as a streak up one side, and it becomes more obvious in old or handled specimens. Scrape the base lightly and give it a few minutes. Absence does not disprove the identification, but presence supports it strongly.
Taking a Spore Print
Small caps make small prints, so use several and be patient. Pick fully mature caps whose gills have already darkened, trim the stipe off close, and set the caps gill-side down on white paper. Cover with a glass or a small bowl to hold humidity and block draughts, and leave them six to twelve hours somewhere still.
The deposit is dark purple-brown, sometimes reading as near-black where thick. Smear it with a fingertip to spread it thin and the purple tone becomes obvious. Under a microscope the spores are smooth, ellipsoid, thick-walled with a clear germ pore, roughly 11 to 15 by 7 to 9 micrometres.
The print colour is the single most decisive character in this whole guide, because it eliminates entire genera at once.
Separating It From Look-alikes on Morphology Alone
Panaeolina foenisecii grows in the same lawns and pastures and is a similar size, but its cap is broadly convex to bell-shaped with no pointed papilla, it fades in bands leaving a darker zone at the margin, its gills are mottled and unevenly spotted as the spores ripen, and its spore print is dark brown rather than purple-brown. Its spores are roughened, not smooth.
Panaeolus papilionaceus and relatives have grey-black mottled gills, a black spore print, cap margins often hung with white veil teeth, and stouter stipes, and they grow directly on dung.
Conocybe species are fragile, with conical to bell-shaped caps but no sharp papilla, cinnamon to rust-brown gills, and a rusty-brown spore print.
Mycena species may be conical and lined but have white to pale grey gills and a white spore print, and their caps have no separable gelatinous skin.
Protostropharia semiglobata is larger, with a hemispherical, not conical, sticky yellow cap, a ring zone on a long stipe, and it grows on dung.
Galerina species have rusty-brown spore prints, often a distinct ring on the stipe, and typically grow on wood, moss or woody debris rather than in open grass.
Deconica and other small brown grassland species lack the combination of a pointed papilla, a peelable pellicle and a purple-brown print.
