Season

Typically fruits from late summer through autumn, often appearing after periods of rainfall.

Habitat

Found in woodlands, particularly associated with birch, pine, and spruce trees. It forms symbiotic relationships with the root systems of these trees.

Key characteristics

Large, bright red cap covered with white, wart-like spots (remnants of the universal veil). The cap starts globose and flattens with age. It features white gills, a white stem with a ring (annulus), and a bulbous base with a volva. The spore print is white.

Look-alikes

Amanita caesarea (which has an orange cap and yellow gills/stem), and Amanita parcivolvata (which lacks a ring on the stem).

Ecological role

Mycorrhizal fungus that provides trees with water and minerals in exchange for sugars produced through photosynthesis. It plays a vital role in forest health and tree growth.
