Season

Typically found from late summer through late autumn (August to November in the Northern Hemisphere).

Habitat

Grows on the ground in both deciduous and coniferous woodlands, as well as in gardens, parks, and heaths. It is commonly found near birch, oak, or pine trees.

Key characteristics

Convex to funnel-shaped cap with a characteristically inrolled margin, especially when young. The cap surface is brownish-ochre to olive-brown and can be slightly felted or tacky when moist. Gills are decurrent, yellowish, and bruise brown when touched. The stem is relatively short, stout, and similar in color to the cap.

Look-alikes

Paxillus cuprinus (associated with deciduous trees, having a more metallic or copper-toned cap) and Paxillus obscurisporus (which is generally larger with a wider stem).

Ecological role

Mycorrhizal fungus that forms symbiotic relationships with various tree species, aiding in nutrient and water uptake. It also has the ability to act saprotrophically under certain conditions.
