Season

Typically fruits from late summer through autumn, especially after periods of moderate rainfall.

Habitat

Commonly found on the ground in both coniferous and deciduous forests, often associated with birch, oak, or pine trees. Also frequently appears in gardens, parks, and heaths where tree roots are present.

Key characteristics

Funnel-shaped cap with a deeply incurved (rolled) margin. Cap color ranges from yellowish-brown to olive-brown, often staining darker when bruised. Gills are decurrent, yellowish, and also stain brown upon handling. Stem is short and stout, similar in color to the cap. Spore print is brown.

Look-alikes

Paxillus rubicundulus (often smaller and associated with alder trees) and Tapinella atrotomentosa (which features a thick, dark brown velvety stem and grows on wood).

Ecological role

Ectomycorrhizal fungus that forms mutually beneficial relationships with various tree species, aiding in nutrient and water absorption for the tree while receiving carbohydrates in return.
