Habitat

Commonly found in grassy areas such as lawns, parks, and meadows; often grows in large circles known as 'fairy rings'.

Key characteristics

Large white to tan cap with brownish scales; free, crowded gills that turn a distinctive grayish-green as they mature; white stem with a thick, double-layered ring; green spore print.

Look-alikes

Chlorophyllum rhacodes (Shaggy Parasol) which has white spores and reddish-staining flesh, and Macrolepiota procera (Parasol Mushroom) which is taller with a snakeskin-patterned stem and white spores.

Ecological role

Saprophytic, meaning it breaks down decaying organic matter in the soil.
