Season

Indoors, it can occur year-round. Outdoors, it appears in summer and autumn in tropical or subtropical climates.

Habitat

Commonly found in indoor potted plants, greenhouses, and compost piles. It thrives in warm, moist, nutrient-rich potting soil containing high amounts of organic matter.

Key characteristics

Bright lemon-yellow to sulfur-yellow throughout. The cap is oval when young, becoming bell-shaped or conical with age, covered in fine powdery scales. The gills are free from the stem and crowded. The stem is thin, often with a fragile ring and a slightly swollen base. Spore print is white.

Look-alikes

Leucocoprinus sulphurellus is similar but often has a blue-green bruising reaction. Leucocoprinus ianthinus is similar in shape but has purple or lilac tones on the cap.

Ecological role

Saprophytic; it breaks down organic matter in the soil or potting medium, contributing to nutrient cycling within the planter or ecosystem.
